I climbed out of the vehicle and shook my head once more at the tiny badge around Pretty Boy’s neck. I looked around at the damage and mess. Robert growled as he joined me, “I really hate bombers.”
I nodded as I moved into the rubble of the destroyed office. I nodded to the blue uniformed fire marshal who turned to gesture, “the point of detonation was the last desk in the corner.”
We looked and I shook my head, “since water was used to put out the flames we won’t have resonance.”
Robert nodded as he walked closer, “we just have to do things the old fashion way.”
I snorted as I followed, “well not completely.”
He glanced at me as I looked around carefully before pointing to what looked like part of the bomb. It rose and floated to me and I began to chant. Other pieces and bits rose and joined the first and slowly everything except the explosives was there. I nodded and whispered a spell as Robert took several pictures from different angles.
I looked at the ghostly image that appeared, “a custom made compound?”
Robert nodded as he looked at the atomic image, “so our bomber is a chemist.”
I looked around as I created an evidence box and sent the bomb fragments into it, “how many people were killed?”
The fire marshal cleared his throat, “four. Three others had not got here yet.”
We started for the door and the scene techs came in. I shook my head, “do you remember any bombing like this?”
Robert shook his head as he handed the evidence box to a tech, “not recently.”
I stopped at the first uniform on the scene, “you took a picture of everyone watching?”
She was grim as she nodded, “I sent the remotes up while I went to check for survivors.”
She pulled her remote viewer and we watched and looked at the people watching the building. A couple stood out and I touched the screen, “run these and send the vid to the techs.”
She nodded and turned the viewer as the medical examiner arrived. I looked at Morticia as she stepped out, “you are going to need bags for the body parts.”
She sighed and nodded, “I dislike bombs.”
She waved as she went to the back of her vehicle and I turned to look around at the other buildings. I pointed to one and Robert nodded and started walking with me. This was the only building with a vid camera watching the street and hopefully the building the bomb went off in. It turned out the camera wasn’t operating.
Robert grumped but I frowned at the building security officer, “was it operating yesterday?”
She turned and checked before nodding, “according to the log it went down at midnight.”
I looked at Robert and he sat on the corner of the security desk, “see if it is working now.”
She turned to start the vid feed and blinked, “it is.”
I gestured her back and murmured and chanted a spell. An image flickered in the seat she had been in and then started moving as if going backwards in time. It went faster and until another replaced it and Robert stood, “There.”
I had stopped the spell and played it forward and we watched as the night security officer reached out and entered the commands to shut the vid feed off. I dismissed it and looked at the wide eyed officer, “what is his name and address?”
She stammered as she turned and gestured, “my company would know.”
They were more than eager to assist and we left and headed to the security officer’s home. His name was Allen Detter and he lived alone in a large apartment complex. We were walking down the hall towards his door when it exploded out into the hall. I gestured and started chanting as I continued to walk.
Robert had stopped and was calling it in as I stepped into the smoking ruin. Signs of shrapnel riddled three walls and the blast had blown a hole in the forth. The body of a man was in a far corner and even from the doorway I knew he was dead. I finished my chant and the fires in the apartment died.
Robert joined me, “anything?”
I shrugged as I continued to look around, “we might get an image from the bomb.”
I chanted and like in the office the pieces of the bomb began coming together. When they were done I started another spell and growled when all I saw was darkness and water. I looked at Robert, “he is hiding his tracks.”
I moved to the body and squatted, “think he was paid?”
Robert was looking at something in the kitchen, “by the stack of credit notes I would say yes.”
I went into the kitchen and saw the money on the table and chanted but the only image was the dead man’s. I growled and we moved to the door to wait for the uniforms. After Morticia arrived we left and returned to our office. We began to run comparisons on the bomb and each component.
It was hours before I sat back and looked around, “a bomber doesn’t just appear.”
Robert looked up and sat back, “what are you thinking?”
I gestured and an image lifted off my desk comp and floated between us, “the first bomb was larger and on a simple timer. The second was smaller and used a motion sensor to trigger it.”
He nodded and leaned forward, “which means some type of training.”
I nodded, “and every school records each person and any pattern or signature they use.”
I dismissed the image, “but there is no record of him. We have him using the same twists on the wires. The same type of explosives. The same type of detonators. He even put both bombs together the same way.”
Robert frowned and stood to stretch, “perhaps we need a break.”
I shook my head, “What I am thinking is he has gotten into the school data base and removed the information.”
I looked at Pretty Boy asleep on the corner of my desk, “time to look for something else. Why kill the people in the office?”
Robert shifted some papers on the desk, “everyone was clean. The relatives all claim they didn’t have enemies.”
I snorted, “everyone has enemies.”
I sat back as I thought and looked at Robert, “what about the three people that were late?”
Robert looked at his notes, “two were delayed on the tram and the third stopped to get coffee for everyone. He said he did that every morning.”
I thought about it, “was it unusual for any of them to be late?”
He glanced at his notes again, “one had trouble with a vehicle and took the tram... the uniform noted that he said he was never late until today.”
I stood, “time to go ask him more questions.”
I lifted Pretty Boy on my way past and Robert fell in beside me. Our first stop was the destroyed office but it was boarded up so we headed to Mr Andrews home. It was on the edge of the city and when I set the vehicle down the man we were looking for was just getting out of his vehicle.
I glanced at Robert, “we might want to check his home.”
He nodded as he got out with Pretty Boy clinging to his shoulder, “Mr Andrews?”
I climbed out and started for the house. I chanted and drew runes in the air as I reached the door. The door began to glow and I turned and started to run, “down!”
I took three steps to the side and away before the door exploded out. The blast tossed me like a rag doll and when I came down it was in one of the bushes in the yard. I rolled through it and Robert was suddenly there slapping flames out on my legs. I growled and turned to look at the empty doorway before gesturing to Mr Andrews as he started running away.
Robert cursed as he came to his feet to go after him but Pretty Boy struck before he had gone more than a dozen steps. I murmured a spell and tiny pieces of shrapnel came out of my legs. I stood and glanced at Robert pulling Mr Andrews back, “he was the target.”
He nodded and looked at the house, “can you do anything?”
I looked at the house and sighed before slowly straightening and beginning to chant. The few flames went out and slowly the smoke cleared. I looked around as Robert put Mr Andrews in the back of our vehicle. Neighbors were standing on their lawns to see what was going on and I smiled as I limped across the street to start asking questions.
Peace officers with sirens blaring started flying in and then an ambulance and the bomb squad. One old woman remembered seeing a man entering the house and gave me permission to enspell her. That gave us an image and Robert started running it as two paramedics made me sit while they checked me and bandaged the wounds in my legs.
I was surprised when one held her hand on my leg and whispered a healing charm. I felt the tingle as the wounds began to knit together. I gestured the other paramedic back and looked at the young woman, “you are not trained.”
She blushed, “it was a simple healing charm. Sometimes it works and other times not.”
I smiled as I pulled a card and held it out, “go to this address and speak with the man that answers the door. Tell the man Simon Glimmer sent you and he won’t charge you anything to teach you the basics. If you learn to focus and use your ability it will come every time.”
She looked at me before nodding, “thank you.”
I nodded and stood and straightened my clothing before heading across to Robert, “ready to go?”
He nodded and gestured to our vehicle, “I think we can put Mr Andrews in a safe house.”
I gestured to the driver side as I moved around to get in. Once Robert had lifted I turned to look into the back and gestured to create the image of the man the neighbor had seen, “Mr Andrews, do you know this man?”
He nodded and licked his lips, “he was a client and lost a lot of money.”
I let the image go, “his name?”
He shook his head, “I’m not sure, Bins I think.”
I sat back as I thought and then used my comm to call the city stock exchange. I requested copies of any exchange report with the name of Bins. I glanced at the house Robert stopped at and opened my door and looked around before opening the vehicle back door. Robert walked to the front door of the house and touched his badge to the lock interface and it opened.
I stayed beside Mr Andrews all the way to the door and sent Pretty Boy up to look around. I closed the door and moved to watch out the window while Robert checked the house. It was a couple of hours before I got the download from the stock exchange. I sat and rubbed my leg as I started reading and looking at the reports.
I glanced at Robert when I finished and handed it to him, “this is our man.”
He started going through the records and finally handed my comm back, “I’ll get a couple of uniforms to relieve us and we will pay a visit to Mr Bins.”
The exchange records had the man’s full name and address so we waited until an unmarked vehicle landed behind ours. I relaxed while Robert drove and accessed each demolition school for records of payment instead of attendance. I found what I needed and looked at my partner, “he went to MacCann’s.”
Robert looked at me and I grinned, “account information is protected much better than attendance.”
He grinned and nodded before gesturing, “looks like a small estate.”
I looked, “or a converted farm.”
We landed in front of the house and got out. I let Pretty Boy fly as we walked to the front door. I caught Robert’s arm and nodded to several small deco statues that were angled towards the door. I gestured to the fake light above and to one side and then at the dozen landscape lights that were aimed out and above the lawn.
He growled as I knelt and started drawing a pentagram around us. I stood when I finished and thought before I drew several fiery runes in the air and started chanting. When I finished I gestured to the estate walls and a wave of magic shimmered as it began to spread. I sighed, “I was thinking our suspect likes to use the same compound so the spell I used will change it.”
He grinned, “into what?”
I grinned, “wax.”
He chuckled and I gestured as I stepped out of the pentagram, “time to see what Mr Bins has to say.”
When we stepped up onto the doorstep there were several pops. Robert looked at me and I shrugged, “the detonators.”
He growled and stepped back before kicking the door open, “PEACE OFFICERS!”
There were more pops as we entered and a small man was staring from the other room. He wore a vest filled with explosives and held a grip trigger, “stay back.”
We looked around as we pointed our weapons at him and continued to move into the house. He backed up and licked his lips, “this is enough explosives to take down the whole house.”
I murmured as I moved to one side and Robert snorted, “okay do it.”
Bins stared at him as we stopped and licked his lips again, “I’ll do it.”
Robert snorted, “we are still waiting.”
He looked at me and I shrugged, “blow it up.”
He looked at Robert, “leave and I won’t kill you.”
Robert chuckled, “either do it or stop talking.”
We kept edging closer until suddenly Pretty Boy dropped onto his shoulder. He screamed and threw the trigger as he twisted and tried to swat the gargoyle off his shoulder. We moved quickly and grabbed his arms and turned to push him into a wall. We put the restraints on him as he continued to scream hysterically.
Pretty Boy jumped to Robert’s shoulder as we pulled Bins out. I called the bomb squad while Robert sat him on the ground and read all the charges against him. Bins couldn’t seem to wait to tell us why and how he had done everything. He received a death sentence a week later.
