The Bell Mare
( B )
(Early Married Life) Continued:
The shadow must have thrown all caution to the wind as he stood up and dropped his pants down to his ankles. I saw Bob as he silently crept closer to the man, I moved quietly over to the gate behind the last bush and waited. The man was busily whacking his carrot when Bob’s camera flashed the man immediately bent over, pulled his pants up above his knees, and then trying to pull them up as he ran for the back gate. Bob’s camera flashed again. Just before the man made it to the gate, I stood up swinging my arm and caught him squarely across his chest knocking him backwards onto his back. Bob was fast on his feet and had him before he could regain his feet; I turned on my flash light and held it in his face. The man was not Brad Sadler. Much to our surprise, he was Ben’s kitchen helper, Jerry Tanner. His pants were still down around his knees as Bob took another picture I grabbed Jerry by the front of his shirt pulling him up onto his feet and lost my temper, I punched him squarely in his face knocking him back down again. Bob yelled at me, Jake, “We want him alive not dead!”
I controlled my temper and picked Jerry up then grabbed the back of his collar forcing him out through the gate and into the parking area under the flood light. Jake, “Should I call Sheriff Harris?”
“No Bob; Jerry, I want you to pull up your pants, then get your ass over to the bunkhouse, gather your things together, and head for town. When you get there, stick out your thumb, and put a lot of miles between you and Mason. If I lay eyes on you, again Bob will not be around to protect you. Do you understand what I just said?”
He said, “Yes sir, can I go?”
Bob said, “You are lucky I was here, Jake might have beaten you to death, and no one would have blamed him if he did. I have three pictures of you and I will give them to Sheriff Harris and Jim Johnson when he gets back from Cow Camp. I wouldn’t want to be in your boots if Jim lays eyes on you.”
I said, “You have one half hour to be off of this ranch before I come looking for you, now get your ass out of my sight.”
Bob and I went around to the front door of Sallie’s house and called as Bob knocked on the door. Danielle opened the front door for us and turned the front room and porch light on for us as we came into the house. Sally came out of her bedroom crying, she said, “Did you catch him?
I said, “Yes, it wasn’t Brad Sadler, we caught Jerry Tanner with his pants down around his ankles and Bob took some pictures of him to give to Sheriff Harris, if Jerry ever shows up in this county again he will be arrested. You are safe now Sally, we have an extra bedroom at our house or Danielle and Martha can stay the night with you.”
Sally said, “I appreciate what all of you did for me tonight but, I think I will be safe here by myself. I will check the windows and lock my doors. I can call you on the phone if I need help.”
Bob said, “Sally, in the morning I will go up to Cow Camp and explain to Jim about tonight and send him home.”
“I will appreciate that Bob. Thank all of you for your help.”
All four of us walked back towards home. Martha said, “Do you think Ben has any coffee left?”
Danielle said, “I’ll kick his butt if he don’t”
Bob said, “Jake, it looks like hot tempers run in your family.”
We sat down with Ben as we drank our coffee Bob told Ben he was going to be short kitchen help in the morning and told him about what just took place. After we finished our coffee Bob and Martha left for home. We told Ben we would see him in the morning, I held the cook shack door open for Danielle then closed it, and I put my arm around her waist as we walked home.
Jim Johnson came home from Cow Camp to be with Sally the next morning. Bob went to town and hired Ben a replacement. Her name is Luella Chiver, Tom Chiver, the grocery store owner’s sister. Luella was the first woman hired on the ranches; she is a hard worker and fit right in with everyone.
The week before it was time to start bringing the cows home from Cow Camp for the winter we had an excuse for a ranch bar-b-cue. Ben asked Luella if she would become Mrs. Ben Sampson and she accepted his proposal. By the end of November we were busily finishing up around the ranches, Cow Camp was shut down for the year. Haying was finished and our extra men laid off for the winter. Bob and the other Foremen shipped our excess cows to the Denver and Chicago stockyards by train.
Danielle and I were taking a well-deserved day off together when the phone rang, I said, “Bell Brand.”
The voice on the other end said, “Jake, this is Dave Mosley.”
I said, “Dave, it is good to hear your voice, Danielle, and I are sitting here in the kitchen having some coffee.”
“What I called you for, you heard about the airplane crash three months or so ago, when Mr. and Mrs. Miles were killed? I have been talking with Mrs. Jacobson, Mrs. Miles’s mother. She has been taking care of the Miles’s children but told me she was too old to keep up with a two and a four year old. She asked me if I knew of a couple who would give them a decent home and adopt them. She would still like to be a part of their lives. Jake, you and Danielle can’t have any children of your own and I was wondering if the two of you would be interested in adopting two young children?”
I said, “Dave are you in your office, its going to take me a little while to explain this to Danielle, can I call you back later?”
“I will be here until five or you can call me tomorrow, I will be in my office all day.”
“Thank you Dave”
As I hung up the phone, Danielle in a questioning voice said, “Explain what to me Jake? Is there something wrong?”
“No, Danielle, just take it easy, we need to have a little family discussion.”
Danielle said, “About what, Jake, you have me scared.”
I walked to the kitchen stove and came back with the pot of coffee, as I refilled our cups I sat back down and said, “You heard about the airplane crash a few months ago when Mr. and Mrs. Miles over by Mission were killed? Steve was from Mission and both he and his wife Eleanor were buried there. We didn’t attend their funeral.”
Danielle said, “Steve, not the Steve, the Hopper flight.”
“Steve’s last name was Miles, and him and his wife Eleanor, were killed in that tragic crash.”
Dave just called to tell us they have two small children and their Grandmother is taking care of them in Deming. Dave said, “Mrs. Jacobson told him she was too old to take on the responsibility of trying to raise the children by herself. She asked Dave if he knew of a family who might consider adopting them into a good home.”
Danielle jumped out of her chair and ran around the table to where I was sitting. I slid my chair back a couple of feet as she turned around and sat down on my lap. Danielle put her arms around my neck and said, “Jake, do you think we would have a chance to adopt them?”
I said Danielle, “Taking care of a bunch of ranches isn’t the same as taking care of two young children and this would be taking on a lot of responsibility on both of our parts?”
Danielle said, “Can we at least look into it?”
“Physically and financially, we would not have a problem. What about you, are you mentally capable of taking on this much responsibility?”
She looked into my eyes and said, “Jake, do you have any doubts of my mental state of affairs?”
“No Danielle; I needed to hear it from you. Should I call Dave back and tell him we are interested in the children?”
“Now, Jake, call Dave now and ask when can we see them, find out their ages and if they are male or female. It don’t matter, I just would like to know something about them.”
I called Dave back on the phone and he filled me in, the boy was four and the girl was two years old. Dave said, “I will call Mrs. Jacobson and ask her when you can meet the children then I will call you back.”
“Thank you Dave,” and hung up the phone.
I told Danielle, “Dave will call us back, he said Terry, is the boy’s name he is four years old. His sister’s name is Valery, she is two.”
“Those are beautiful names; I wonder what they look like?”
I said, “Children, you know about this high” as I held out my hand.
She kissed me and said, “Jake, I’m so excited I can’t sit still.”
“Danielle, will you quit squirming and just sit still, I’m only human you know.”
“Maybe I better sit over there in my chair so I won’t distract you.”
As she moved over to her chair, she just could not sit still there either for more than two minutes at a time. “Danielle, you are making me nervous just watching you wiggling around in your chair. Why don’t you go fix something to eat and I’ll listen for the phone.”
She stood up and walked into the kitchen to fix supper, no sooner did she get out of my site, and she stuck her head back around the door jam and said, “Was that the phone Jake?”
“Danielle, will you come in here, sit down and wait for Dave to call, I’ll fix supper before you do something dumb to your self.”
Danielle came in and sat down while I fixed supper. As we were finishing up the phone rang, I thought she was going to fall apart before I answered it. I said, “Bell Brand.”
Dave said, “Jake, I talked to Mrs. Jacobson and she said she could be in my office with the children at two tomorrow if it would be alright with you.”
“Dave, I can’t make any promises but we will be there tomorrow at two, thank you Dave,”
As I hung up the phone, Danielle said, “Tomorrow at two?”
I shook my head in the affirmative and said, “Danielle don’t go getting your hopes to high. I don’t know what kind of hoops we are going to have to jump through.”
Danielle was so excited and talked most of the evening about raising children; the kind of clothes she was going to buy for them. Their first day of school she seemed to have worked herself up into a lather over the what if’s. A serious look suddenly came over Danielle’s face. She said, “Jake, what if they get sick?”
I laughed at her then said, “When they get sick there won’t be too much of a problem, Bob and I can take them out to the barn and give them a shot like we do the horses. In a few days they should be up and kicking their feet in the air like fresh colts.”
Danielle stopped her fussing and turned to me saying, “Jake their little children not colts, you wouldn’t really do that would you?”
I pulled her to me as I sat down in my chair; she sat down on my lap and put her arms around her neck. “Of course not Sweetheart, the needles are probably bigger than their little butts.”
Danielle smiled at me. “Jake, you are trying to pull my leg again aren’t you?”
“Danielle, you need to slow down before you go to bed or you won’t get any rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day for you. You will need to be at your best.”
Danielle went into our bedroom and dressed for bed. When she reappeared in the kitchen, I looked up and saw she was wearing her white short nightgown with the low front exposing her full titties almost down to those big beautiful nipples of hers. I licked my lips and said, “Is it feeding time already?”
She motioned for me to follow her as she turned around and walked into our bedroom. Before I had a chance to finish my coffee and put the empty cup down on the table, she reappeared in the doorway then pulled her nightgown down under her titty and said, “Jake, you haven’t forgot what this is for have you?”
As I started to get up from my chair, she turned around and raised the back of her nightgown to her waist to show me her bare bottom. I said, “Danielle, if I were more of a religious man, I would get down on my knees and sink my teeth into that beautiful bottom of yours, and then I would pray for a case of lockjaw.”
She patted her butt with both hands and said, “Come on big boy.”
Our love making that night seemed different. We hugged and kissed more tenderly as we held each other tightly; we slowly satisfied each other’s needs then drifted off into a very satisfying sleep.
When I woke up, I was still cuddled to Danielle’s back with my arm around her. My hand cupping her firm breast, I gently kissed the back of her neck as she started to wake up. She wiggled her soft butt against my wet stiff cock as I slowly started it into her honey spot. When I had finished getting off, I held her to me as my cock started to go limp inside of her warm pussy until it finally slipped out of her limp and spent. As we lay there cuddled together, she said, “I feel really satisfied and relaxed, I love you Jake.”
I tenderly kissed her just under her ear lobe as she shuddered I said, “I love you too Danielle.”
Danielle slowly pulled away from me, as she rolled over to face me she put her arms around my neck and we passionately kissed each other for a long time before she finally said, “Jake, do you think the children will like us?”
“It might take them a while to adjust to us, they have had a big emotional experience in their little lives, we will just have to be patient and see.”
Danielle and I took our showers and got dressed. We had breakfast then sat back down and finished our coffee. I told her, “I need to go over and find Bob and tell him what we are up to for the rest of the day.
Bob and I sat down in the office and discussed a few things about the ranches that were happening. Bob said, “We are shipping all of the extra hay Jack feels we won’t need.”
“Good, by the way Bob, Dave Mosley called us last night about two children who may be up for adoption. Danielle has been so excited about them every sense she found out she is driving me nuts. We are going to drive over to Deming this morning to meet with the children and their grandmother. We will be gone for the rest of the day. If you need me, call Dave at his office.”
“Good luck and tell Danielle we are rooting for her.”
I went back to the house to get Danielle ready and found it wasn’t necessary. She was sitting at the kitchen table all dressed and nervously waiting to get going. I asked her, “Are you ready to leave for Deming?”
“I have to go pee first, and then we can go.”
I held the car door open for her to get in then closed it. She smiled as I closed my door and started the engine; I put the transmission in drive, as the big Buick started to move toward the highway. We talked about if she would like to bring the children home for a few days to see if they were receptive toward us.
When we stopped in front of Dave’s office, Danielle was so excited. I have never seen her this way before. She said, “Jake, I am so nervous I am afraid I will wet my panties.”
“Danielle will you settle down and control your bodily functions before you piss yourself. You know you didn’t bring a change of clothes along.”
She said, “Can we just sit here a few minutes, I need to settle down.”
I got out of the car and went around to open her car door for her but I was too late. Danielle was already out of the car and standing on the curb. She was shaking badly as I put my arm around her, she said, “Jake. I’m scared!”
“Come on, Dave has a restroom. You can take your time and freshen up while I talk to Dave.”
As we went into Dave’s office, I pointed towards the little girl’s room. I shook hands with Dave, and said, “Danielle needs to use the restroom before she wets herself.”
Dave said, “Mrs. Jacobson is waiting in the other room with the children.”
“We might have a time settling Danielle down before we go in to meet them.”
The restroom door opened, Danielle came out and acted as if she had it all back together again. Dave said, “Shall we?”
As Dave opened the door for us we walked in, Mrs. Jacobson stood up as Dave introduced us. He said, “Mrs. Jacobson; this is the couple I have been telling you about. Jake Lance and his wife Danielle are from Mason. They own the Bell Brand Ranch. Jake, Danielle I would like you to meet Mrs. Jacobson.”
Danielle walked over to Mrs. Jacobson and hugged her.
Dave continued, “This handsome young man is Terry Miles and his little sister, Valery.”
Terry walked over to us and put his little hand out to shake my hand, I said, “I am glad to meet you Terry.”
He said, “Mr. Lance, are you going to take Valery and me home with you?”
As I looked up into Mrs. Jacobson’s tearful eyes, I said, “Would you and the children like to come visit us at the ranch for a week or so while we get to know each other better?”
Little Valery went over to Danielle holding her arms out to her and said, “Mama.”
Danielle bent over and picked Valery up as she hugged her, she said, “Not yet sweetie maybe soon.”
Danielle carried Valery over to Mrs. Jacobson and putting one arm around her, she said, “Mrs. Jacobson, will you come and stay with us for a while, we have plenty of room?”
As Mrs. Jacobson and Danielle sat down on the couch, Terry went over to them, crawled up on Danielle’s lap, and said, “You are pretty, Mrs. Lance.”
Then he put his arms around her neck and kissed her.
I said, Dave, “It looks to me like Terry already knows how to charm the ladies.”
I sat down next to Mrs. Jacobson and said, “Will you be our guest?”
She answered, “Would next week be alright, I need time to pack some clothes for the children.”
“When you are ready, give us a call. We will come to pick you up.”
Mrs. Jacobson said, “When my husband died, I moved into a small one bedroom apartment. I never expected to have two grandchildren move in with me. If I had known Steve and Eleanor were going to,,,”
She started to cry, then said, “It wouldn’t have made much difference, my husband and I couldn’t have been able to afford to keep them even if we had wanted to.”
Terry said, “Mr. Lance, Do you have a horse?”
As I sat him down on my knee I said, “Terry, I have one just your size.”
Danielle smiled at Valery. “When you get big enough we will have a horse just your size too.”
Mrs. Jacobson said, “Danielle, I want to be a part of their life until I die, would it be alright if I would come and visit once in a while, I love them as if they were my own.”
“If we can adopt them you will be welcome any time you would like and for as long as you would like to stay.”
Dave said, “Jake, the county will want to do a background check on both of you and it may take some time. I had my secretary draw up the papers to get things going, if you will sign them I can start things tomorrow.”
“Dave, Are you in a hurry or something, are you?”
“Jake, I knew you and Danielle couldn’t say no.”
Danielle said, “Mrs. Jacobson, when you call we will be here to pick you up. Terry and Valery have already stolen my heart and I am sure Jake feels the same way as me.”
We signed the papers and asked, if we could take them back to their house. Mrs. Jacobson said, “No, Dave will do it.”
She hugged Danielle and said, “I will call you next week.”
When we left the office Danielle said, “I love both of them, they are so sweet.”
I opened the car door for Danielle as she got in she started to cry. I closed her car door and then went around and sat down behind the steering wheel. I leaned over and kissed her on her cheek then I started to drive back home.
On the way home I said, “When Dave and I went out for the papers, he told me Mrs. Jacobson has cancer and she may only have a year or so left. Dave also told me, she is his sister. He said he is too old to take them on, and he thought we would be the best for the children.”
“Could we make room for Mrs. Jacobson too?”
“That might be more than you can handle.”
“Jake, we have been talking about building a guest house; do you think we could build her a house? She would be close to her grandchildren until she,,,”
“I don’t think it is such a bad idea Sweetheart. I will get Bob on it as soon as we get home. She can stay with us until it is built, we need a guest house anyways, and she can stay there as long as she can and be close to the children.”
“I love you Jake, you take things so easily in your stride.”
When we pulled into our parking place behind the house I said, “Why don’t you go on in and I will go talk to Bob, I saw him going into the cook shack as we drove up.”
“Do you think Ben has any pie left? I need some coffee and the pie sounds good. Besides I don’t want to be alone right now.”
I said, as I put my arm around her, “Come on Mrs. Lance, I think I would enjoy your company.”
When we got to the cook shack, I held the door open for her and as she went through, I gave her a swat on that beautiful butt of hers. She jumped through the doorway and turned around to face me, as her face turned red, she said, “Mr. Lance are you trying to get fresh with me?”
I think every one in the cook shack, started to laugh at her. Her blushing intensified, Bob said, “Danielle you better come sit over here next to me where it’s safe.”
As we sat down she said, “Bob, Jake took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting him to slap me on my back side.”
Ben came over with coffee for us and said, “Danielle that was a spectacular entrance you made. Can I get you something to eat?”
“Ben, I am sorry for the disruption I caused. Do you have any pie left?”
He said, “For you Danielle, I have apple, cherry, or peach. Which one would you like?”
“I would like the cherry pie.”
Ben looked at me and said, “How about you Jake? If you can behave yourself long enough, I’ll bring you some pie too.”
“I’ll be good. How about a piece of apple?”
Danielle told Bob about our trip to Deming. “Those kids are just simply adorable. I hope we can adopt them. I gave them Martha and your names for character references.”
I said, “Bob we will need to build the guest house we have been talking about. See if you can get Mack started right away on it just in case Mrs. Jacobson decides to move here, she can be closer to the children.”
Bob said, “One or two bedrooms?”
I said, “Make it two just in case you will need some extra help in the future. We might as well think about that one for future expansion.”
“You are always thinking down the road a ways aren’t you? I will get Mack started. I hope every thing works out for you two. I will tell Martha about the children, I am sure she will be excited for you.”
Danielle said, “Jake, if you won’t cause any more disturbances we can go back to the house.”
“Bob if you need anything, I’ll be at home.”
As we walked across the porch and into the house, I gave Danielle another swat. She jumped and turned around as she put her arms around my neck. I said, “That was just because, I love you Sweetheart.”
The week seemed to drag on for Danielle, she kept busy, but I could tell she was either excited or perhaps just flustered. She cleaned up the bedrooms and bathrooms, although she never said too much about it, I could see she was suffering deep down deep inside herself. I tried to get her mind off her problems when I was home but she wasn’t her old self.
Wednesday evening the phone rang. Danielle made a dive for it before I was able to go answer it. She said, “Hello, Mrs. Jacobson I have been waiting for you to call. Is every thing all right? Yes, we can pick you and the children up tomorrow. Ten o’clock at Dave’s office. Yes, it will be fine. Thank you for calling Mrs. Jacobson. See you then, bye.”
Danielle hung up the phone and wrapped her arms around me as she squeezed me to her, “O, Jake, I was so worried Mrs. Jacobson wouldn’t call or she may have changed her mind about us. I am so relieved. Would you mind if I sat on your lap for a while?”
I pulled my chair away from the kitchen table then sat down. Danielle came around in front of me as she pulled her dress up almost to her waist, she straddled my lap, rather than turning around as she usually did. She sat down letting her dress settle around my legs and wrapped her arms around my neck as she gently kissed my lips. “Jake, I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off of me.”
She lowered her head to my shoulder. “I love you. I need you to hold me tight; I think what I need is a good cry.”
I put my arms around her as she started to cry on my shoulder. “Sweet heart, every thing is going to work out, alright.”
She whispered in my ear, “I needed to hear that from you Jake. Hold me tight.”
We sat there in each other’s arms until my legs went to sleep. “You are going to have to get up Danielle, my legs are asleep.”
She slowly raised herself up. “Sorry Jake, would you like to have a cup of coffee. I think I could use one myself.”
“Let’s drink it in the living room. The couch looks like it will be more comfortable, I will move the end table. Bring the coffeepot with you when you bring the cups.”
We sat there cuddled up drinking our coffee until the pot was empty. I took the coffeepot and cups back to the kitchen. Danielle moved the end table back to where it was, and I sat back down on the couch. Danielle raised her dress and put one leg on both sides of mine. As she settled down on my lap, she let her dress settle then said, “Darling, I think I am getting horney, can I rub around on your lap for a little while.”
She didn’t wait for me to reply. Instead, she reached down between us and undid my pants pulling my dick out. “I have been neglecting him all week. I am sorry Jake.”
She started to wiggle around on my lap and undid her dress top then pulled her titty out for me to suck on her full nipple. It wasn’t but a few minutes before her nipple was hard and sticking straight out into my mouth, after she came, Danielle stood up, pulled her panties down below her knees, and let them drop to the floor. She leaned over pulling my pants down as far as she could. Danielle straddled me again as she guided my hard dick with her hand, into her pussy and slowly started moving back and forth. It wasn’t long before I had my hands up under her dress, holding on to her soft butt cheeks and pulling her down on my hard cock. I started to cum as she loudly said, “Give it all to me Jake, I’m coming, O I’m coming! It feels so good!”
Danielle slowly stopped moving then put her head down on my shoulder. “I really needed that Jake. I feel better now,”
As she started to sob, I kissed the side of her neck and said, “I feel better too Sweetheart.”
We stayed in our embrace for a long time just holding each other. Finally I said, “We need to go to bed, tomorrow is going to be a long day for both of us.”
She slowly backed off my lap to stand in front of me as she took my hands in hers and pulled me up from the couch. She put her arms around my waist and said, “Our love making was fulfilling tonight, I am ready to go to bed.”
We woke up early and took our showers before breakfast. As we were sitting at the kitchen table she said, “From now on, we will have to have sex behind closed doors. We wouldn’t want the children to catch us being nasty would we?”
We loaded up and started for Deming. As we pulled in front of Dave’s office and stopped I said, “Are you ready for this?”
Danielle shook her head, and then we went into the office. Dave motioned me over to him. “I have some papers for you to sign Jake, Danielle you too. I go before the Judge next Friday, if he approves the adoption will be final.”
Danielle said, “You mean that fast. I was thinking a month or so.”
Dave said, “I pulled a few favors other wise it would be at least that long. I will let you know as soon as I get out of court.”
“Dave, do you think if we would build a guesthouse we could convince Mrs. Jacobson to live on the ranch close to us? She would be close to her grandchildren and she could help Danielle get started on a good footing.”
Dave said, “You know she is going to get awfully sick and may not be much help to Danielle.”
“We discussed that last night. My foreman has already contacted our contractor to build her a house close to ours; it will wind up being a guesthouse after she is gone. You know about us having an ambulance and four EMTs right close by if she needs to go to the hospital. Danielle is certified by the hospital here in Deming”
“I think we need to ask Mrs. Jacobson if your offer is satisfactory to her. I don’t think she could turn down such a kind offer.
Dave looked up and there stood Mrs. Jacobson in the doorway. She said, “Jake, lets see how this next week goes; I don’t want to cause you two any more problems than necessary.”
Danielle said, “We want you with the children as long as you can manage it. We will take care of you as if you were part of our family. You can give us your answer next week. The house will take about a month to build, and then you can move right in. It will be your decision to make.”
Danielle put her arms around Mrs. Jacobson waist, and then said, “Are you ready to go home?”
She went in to the next room and picked up little Valery and put her hand out to Terry saying, “Are you ready to go home too? Jake can you load their things into the car by your self?”
Dave said, “I’ll help you Jake.”
Danielle sat in the back seat with Valery on her lap and Terry curled up against her all of the way home. Mrs. Jacobson sat in the front seat with me and we talked most of the way back to the ranch. As I slowed down to turn into the Bell Brand, she said, “I remember this place when I was not much older than Terry. My family came here occasionally to visit. I do not remember who lived here but. It was a beautiful house then.”
“This is where you will be staying until we finish your house. It will be right over there where the men are working. It will only take you a few minutes to walk from there to here. We have a man in the cook shack twenty-four hours a day if you don’t feel like cooking or you can come to our house to eat. Danielle is getting to be a pretty good cook.”
I got out of the car and went around and opened Mrs. Jacobson’s car door and helped her out then shut the door. I opened Danielle’s door and took Terry’s hand then helped Danielle out of the car. As we walked into the house Mrs. Jacobson said, “It is as I remember it when I was just a young girl. This is a beautiful old house.”
Danielle said, “We have a spare bedroom down stairs with a bath close by or the upstairs has four bedrooms and a bath. Take a look around and decide what is best for you. If you
decide to stay; the new house will be ready for you to move into in about a month. You are welcome here.”
Mrs. Jacobson said, “Thank you Danielle. Would you please call me Rose, I would feel more comfortable if you would.”
I turned Terry loose and said, “Terry, you help Grandma and I’ll unload the car.”
When I came back into the house, every one was upstairs looking at the bedrooms. As Danielle came down the stairs, she said, “Jake, Rose told me she would like to take one of the upstairs bedrooms and Terry and Valery could share one of the others next to hers.”
I took all of their things up to their rooms then came down the stairs to get the crib for Valery. Rose, told me where she wanted everything placed. I heard Rose call to Danielle and said Valery needed changing. I could hear Danielle gag as she started to change Valery. I took Terry’s hand and said, “Come on, Son, we have men things to do.”
As we walked across the yard, I pointed to the cook shack. “We are going to go over there and see if Ben has anything a little boy can eat.”
I sat Terry down in a chair as Ben came over to us. “Jake, who is this new cowboy you brought with you?”
I introduced them, Ben said, “Terry I have a piece of apple pie and a glass of milk for you. Jake would you like some too?”
“You can forget about the milk, I’ll have coffee instead.”
Terry said, “Thank you Mr. Ben.”
I told Ben about Terry and Valery and then told him about their Grandmother. “Her name is Mrs. Jacobson but, she will probably want you to call her Rose.”
Terry and I went over to see Ike before we walked back to the house. When we came in, Danielle said, “I didn’t think one little girl could fill a diaper as full as she did, I almost threw up. Rose told me I can expect to change Valery about once an hour or so.”
Danielle and Rose seemed to be getting along well together. “I need to go talk to Bob. I’ll see you at supper time.”
There is a time men should go do something else. I walked over to the barn and found Bob.
“Bob our family is growing by leaps and bounds. We have a boy, girl, and their Grandma staying with us. Her name is Mrs. Jacobson but, she will probably want everyone to call her Rose.”
“If you two need to get away or do something by your selves, Martha can look after things while you’re gone.”
“I appreciate your offer, it’s not going to be easy for us to make the changes but I am sure things will work out.”
When I went, back to the house Danielle and Rose were having coffee. I sat down to join them. Valery was sitting in Danielle’s lap.”
“It looks like you two are going to get along real good.”
Danielle said, “Jake; she is such a good little girl. I love her as much as if she was my own. Terry fits right in, except you will have to teach him a lot about the ranch. Some day he will run this outfit and you can help him to make the right discussions, like Grandpa John did with you.”
The first night Danielle must have been up and down those stairs twenty times checking on the children. Rose never said anything but, I am sure she was probably weary of being woke up all night too. The next day things started to slow down for Danielle. Her nerves were settling and thanks to Rose, the household was back under control. I spent most of the day with my foremen or over at the cook shack with Ben.
When Grandma Rose’s house was finished, she moved in but seemed to spend most of her free time with Danielle and her grandchildren. I would take Terry with me when I could sneak him away from the women. I think our little trips around the ranch were pleasing to him as well as for me. I had Bob break one of the smaller horses for Terry, in the mean time Ike was getting plenty of exercise. Terry was always in his cowboy outfit. Ike would strut around the ranch like a Peacock with Terry on his back.
Valery and Danielle had very little problems except for when Valery would load her three-cornered pants. Danielle was changing Valery but she must have been a little stronger smelling than usual. Danielle turned inside out, then handed Valery her diaper and told her, “If you can shit them, you can clean them from now on. Go on and wash your diaper in the toilet”
Valery got sick to from the smell, but that was the last time she dirtied her diapers. Grandma Rose must have been relieved too.
The children grew like weeds, I don’t know if it was because of the good food or the mountain air. Summer passed and after the cattle came back from Cow Camp, Danielle and I took a few days of hunting at the cabin. We had a chance to catch up on our lives.
We never thought two little children could turn our routine upside down as much as they did. Not to mention what happened to our sex life.
We stayed at the cabin three days, settling our nerves and catching up but Danielle missed her children. On the morning of the third day, we were enjoying our morning coffee when Danielle said, “Jake, I want to go back to the ranch, Terry and Valery need me.”
We cleaned up the cabin and headed back to the Bell Brand. After I closed the Cow Camp gate, I looked at Danielle and said, “I don’t think the kids miss you as much as you miss the kids.”
“I have been neglecting your feeding time too Jake, I am sorry. You wait until I get you in bed tonight.”
When we pulled up into the parking area Terry and Valery came running to us, as we carried them back into the house Rose said, “They have been looking for you all day. I think they missed you.”
Our adoption papers came through but would not be final until the next November.
Bob, Jim, and I went out and cut three beautiful Christmas trees for our families the week before Christmas. Danielle and Rose decorated our tree for Terry and Valery. There were so many gifts under the tree this year. Mostly clothes for the children. There were a lot of toys, enough it would make four children happy.
Danielle was really getting into the swing of things. Rose was busy baking and Danielle just seemed to dance around the kitchen as she hummed little ditties now and again. I sat down at the table to drink my coffee and warm up a bit. As Danielle walked by me humming away I said, “Cluck, Cluck, Cluck.”
She stopped cold and then that beautiful smile of hers came across her face as she came over and sat down on my lap. “Old Mother Hen you say?”
Rose smiled, “I need to check on the kids.”
As she left the kitchen she said, “You two need some time to yourselves.”
Danielle put her arms around my neck and kissed me. “Jake I love you and the children; we have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas. Rose seems to be holding on well and I think she is really looking forward to the Holiday Season with her grandchildren.”
Christmas morning Rose came over early and had Terry and Valery up. We woke up to all of the commotion, as we came out of our bedroom in our robes the kids and Rose started to open their gifts. Danielle jumped right into the middle of things as if she was
one of the kids. I picked up the camera and started to take pictures as the children started opening their Christmas gifts.
Valery was excited when she opened a box and found real panties. “Mommy, I won’t wet these. They are to pretty.”
Terry was happy with his new cowboy outfit, especially his new cowboy boots. I went into the pantry and brought Terry his very own saddle. He said, “Will it fit Ike Daddy?”
“No, but it will fit Smoky. He goes with the saddle. You can ride him later today.”
Rose was happy with her nightgown, slippers, and robe. We bought her a new quilt and bedspread for her bed.
I bought Danielle a new riding outfit so she could ride Molly with the kids without having to fight a dress. When she put it on and came back into the living room to model her new outfit, “I whistled and told Rose. I want you to meet the new Bell Mare.”
Danielle blushed and Rose said, “You look good in your new riding outfit Danielle.”
Danielle and Rose went together and bought me a new hat and rope I have been needing. After breakfast, we took the kids out to the corral to saddle Smoky. Terry rode around the corral for a while then we unsaddled him and Terry gave Smoky some oats. We went back inside to warm up when Valery said, “Daddy, when I am as big as Terry will I get a horse too?
Danielle said, “Valery, you will have your own horse and saddle next year.”
I said, “Don’t you think you are pushing things a little too soon?”
“Don’t bet on it, she is going to be a big girl by next Christmas.”
We were now into the slack time around the ranches, just waiting for spring so we can get things going again. Most of our men looked after the cattle and horses. Making repairs and mending fences.
The middle of February Rose took sick. We called Dave and told him we were bringing Rose to Deming, could he meet us at the hospital. When we arrived, Dave had already made arrangements and her doctor told us Rose would be gone in about two weeks. Danielle stayed with Rose and I went back to the ranch. I asked Bob and Martha if they would keep the children. Martha said she would come and stay with Terry and Valery until we returned. She said, “Jake, the children will be more comfortable at home in familiar surroundings.”
I thanked them and drove back to Deming the next morning. Danielle and I took a hotel room and ate at the cafe. Dave joined us and said, “I don’t know where Rose will be buried.”
“Dave if it’s all the same to you, Rose could be buried at the Home Ranch with the rest of our relatives.”
“I am not sure but, I think she has a plot next to her husband. I will have to check and let you know. Thank you for your kind offer.”
Dave was right; she had her plot already arranged for. Rose died two days later and was buried next to her husband in Deming. We stayed over until the services before returning home.
We went home with heavy hearts as Rose was more like family to us and we missed her. Danielle said, “Rose helped me through our hard times. I hope we did the same for her.”
By March fifteenth, the ranches were humming again. The cattle were being shipped to Cow Camp and the new Cowboys had settled in. Jack Snow was busy getting things going on the Snow Ranch and Bill Roberts had things going at the Bailey Ranch.
Joe Nathan had all of his cows up to the high country and was helping Chris Nickels move his bulls to be scattered for the summer at Cow Camp.
Bob Young and Jim Johnson were busy with the horses. The mares would be having their colts soon and the extra gildings were put out to pasture for reserve in case they were needed by any of the cowboys for replacement mounts.
I kept busy in the office until Bob took over then I burned a lot of gasoline covering the other ranches. I have a good bunch of foremen. They had most every thing under control by the end of March, which gave me a little time to be with Danielle and the kids.
On the ninth of April the phone rang at the house, Danielle said, “Bell Brand, this is Danielle can I help you?”
It was Sheriff Harris on the line. Danielle said, “I will tell Jake and call you back.”
Danielle came out on the porch and waved me to the house, when I came in she said, “Sheriff Harris, asked us if we could take two children in until the county could decide what to do with them. They need a safe place until their father can be found. The mother dumped them at the hardware store in Mason and drove off.”
“Are you ready to take on two more kids?”
“Jake, if you can handle them so can I. Can I call Sheriff Harris and tell him to bring them out to the ranch?”
I nodded my head, “Go ahead and call him.”
An hour later, the sheriff and a woman from his office brought the children to the ranch. The girl was probably five, about the same age as Terry and the boy was younger perhaps a little older than Valery. They looked like they had gone without much food, as they were quite under nourished and dirty. Danielle said, “They need a bath and lots of food and care.”
The woman’s name was Barbara she said, “I can stay and help you if you need me to.”
“I should be able to handle things. If not, I have two other women to help me. Thank you Barbara.”
Barbara said, “Their names are Becky and Paul as far as we know. We think their last names are Norris. We are not sure at this time.”
Before Sheriff Harris and Barbara went back to Mason, he said, “If you need anything for the children, save the receipts and the county will reimburse you as well as pay you for keeping them. I’ll keep you informed of our progress.”
Danielle fed and bathed them before putting them to bed.
“They are really sweet kids and I don’t see where they have been hurt or bruised but, they have gone with out much food for a while. I can fatten them back up in a week or so. I’ll call Martha tomorrow perhaps she can see something I missed.”
The next morning Paul and Becky ate a good breakfast. Martha came over to help Danielle check the children over again and found nothing wrong with them that a few good meals would not cure. They settled right in with Terry and Valery. You would have thought they had been together for the past year or so. Danielle said, “I don’t see why they can’t share the same beds. I’ll put the two girls together and the two boys together in the other room. I’ll keep an eye on them to see if there are any problems. I can always separate them if need be.”
The children were getting along just fine, not even one little argument. Danielle said, “Jake I wish they were all ours, they get along so well together.”
“Danielle, are you biting off more than you can chew?”
“I don’t think so. Rose did a good job preparing me for a large family. I can handle it.”
Two weeks later Sheriff Harris and Barbara came out to the ranch. We sat down over coffee and cake. Sheriff Harris said, “We found out the father was out of work and was killed in a botched hold up in Utah. Their mother has kept on the run every since. She dumped the children in Mason. The High Way Patrol tried to stop her in Arizona; she drove her car off into a canal and drowned. Evidence at the scene showed she had been living in her car for quite some time, probably before her husband died. We have not been able to find any relatives and need more time. Can the children stay with you until we decide what we are going to do with them?”
Danielle said, “Barbara, do you think they will be adoptable?”
“We have no idea at this point in time. Would you and Jake possibly be interested in adopting them?”
Danielle looked at me and there was no way I could say no, I shook my head and Danielle said, “In a heart beat Barbara.”
Sheriff Harris said, “Jake, Danielle, we will let you know what we find out. Do you want to keep them until then?”
Danielle said, “Yes we do.”
As they got up to leave, they thanked Danielle for the coffee and cake then Barbara said, “We will keep in contact with you.”
The next morning Danielle called Sally, “Sally could you watch the kids while Martha and I go to town shopping for some clothes?”
She said, “Will nine o’clock be all right?”
“That will be fine Sally. We will be back as soon as we can. If you have any problems call Jake and he can be right there.”
Martha came over and then Sally showed up. Danielle told the children she would be gone for a while. “You will mind Sally or you will have to answer to me when I get home, OK?”
Martha and Danielle drove off to town and returned with enough clothes to keep them going for a week with out having to do any washing.
Barbara showed up on Friday to tell us Paul and Becky are a ward of the court and if they are not adopted in sixty days they would be sent to a state orphanage until they were.
Danielle said, “Can I have our attorney contact the judge and see if we can adopt them?”
“Judge Lewis is handling their case. I wish you luck Danielle they are two lovely children.”
When I came in for lunch Danielle told me about what Barbara had said and then asked me if it would be all right if she called Dave Mosley?
“If it is what you want Sweetheart call him up and get him busy. He will need to contact Judge Lewis and see what is needed in the way of paper work.”
Danielle put her arms around my neck. “Jake, you will be a good father. Will you have three more horses ready by Christmas?”
I kissed her and said, “I’ll get Bob right on it.”
I thought to myself, poor Bob, he really gets the dirty work.
Danielle called Dave and explained what she needed him to do. Dave said, “I will get right on the phone to Judge Lewis and let you know what I find out. Do you want me to start the paper work?”
“Jake and I are ready. You can get things going right away. Thank you Dave.”
As we sat at the dining room table drinking our coffee, the children were playing on the rug. They had coloring books, dolls, blocks, stuffed animals, and their blankets to keep them busy. Valery and Becky had their dolls and Terry and Paul were busy with the blocks. Valery still hung on to her bottle and the rest drank from glasses. They kept Danielle and her mop working overtime.
I was finally getting use to Mommy this and Mommy that. Every time one of them said Mommy, Danielle was up and gone to see what they needed. She was a little over protective but she took care of their every needs. After Danielle fed all of us, she did the dishes then bathed the lot of them, dressed them for bed and tucked them in. I don’t know where she found all of the time and energy but, a more loving mother and wife you could not ask for. She always took the time to hold and talk to each one of them. After they were in bed Danielle would wash their clothes, then we had a little time to relax on the couch or sit at the table drinking our coffee and discuss the day’s happenings with the children or the ranches. She always took time for me, sometimes she would sit on my lap, put her arms around my neck, and go to sleep but I never heard her complain about how tired she was.
On those rare occasions, I would carry her into our bedroom, undress, and then tuck her into bed. Some times, she would wake up and kiss me good night. I would take care of the clothes, moving them from the washer to the dryer then folding them when they came out of the dryer. If I found a mess or toys, lying around I would pick them up and put the toys back into the toy box. I could stomp around the house, bang things together in the kitchen or throw a fit, and never disturb her but, just let one of her kids say Mommy and she was up like a shot. I cannot remember a time she was not there tending to them before I went to check. Danielle just seemed to know before they opened their mouths that she was needed. If one of the children were, sick she would sit up in the rocking chair holding her baby in her lap until he or she went to sleep then put them on the couch for the night so she could be right there when they woke up.
Danielle finished her coffee then started for our bedroom, stopping at the door she said, “Jake, its time to feed the baby.”
Then she disappeared into our bedroom. I sat my coffee cup down and took off to join her. I knew I was in for some fabulous lovemaking.
Monday morning Dave called and said, “Judge Lewis is waiting for the papers to be delivered to his office. He told me there should be no problems as you have already adopted two and your records are still on file in his office. You will have to appear, just like you did for Valery and Terry.”
Danielle thanked him and said, “Jake it looks like we have four children, do you want any more?”
“No, Danielle I think four in two years is enough don’t you?”
Danielle smiled and said, “Five Jake, I am still breast feeding one.”
Dave called back and said, “Danielle can you and Jake meet me in Judge Lewis’s office Wednesday at ten o’clock to sign the papers?”
“We will be there; can we bring the children with us?”
“I think it would be a good idea Danielle, the judge saw the children when they were brought to Deming after they were abandoned. A before and after look, might make a point or two in your favor. See you there.”
Danielle said, “Jake, Sheriff Harris, and Barbara brought Paul and Becky here about an hour after we called him back. Dave told me they were taken to Deming to appear before Judge Lewis. Those kids were already brought back to Mason in the hopes we would take them in.”
“Danielle, do you think Dave and Judge Lewis had anything to do with putting Sheriff Harris and Barbara up to trying to get us to adopt them?”
“Why else would the adoption papers be ready to sign before the judge so quickly. I am glad they did but, I think they played us like a new violin, don’t you?”
“Danielle, never look a gift horse in the mouth. Some one was looking after us,”
I pointed my finger upwards.
“I think your right Jake, how about some coffee before I wake up the kids?”
Wednesday morning we woke the children up early ate and put them in their best clothes for the trip to see Judge Lewis. We arrived in Deming and Danielle told me to carry Paul and take Terry’s hand as she carried Valery and took Becky’s hand. We went into the courthouse and found Dave. He led us to Judge Lewis’s chambers as we walked in we saw Sheriff Harris and Barbara Smith waiting for us. Judge Lewis came into the room and said, “Dave, I see you brought the whole family with you.”
Dave said, “Your Honor, all we need is your signature.”
Judge Lewis said, “Does the County have any objections, pertaining to the adoption of Becky and Paul Norris by Jake and Danielle Lance?”
Both Sheriff Harris and Barbara Smith said, “No, Your Honor.”
Judge Lewis said, “If no legal guardians come forward within ninety days, my discussion will be final; Becky and Paul’s last name will be changed to Lance.
The County Child Protective Services will be held responsible for all financial obligations both past and future for ninety days when the adoption becomes final.”
Judge Lewis came down from his bench and said, “Jake, Danielle, you have a fine looking family. If you want any more just let us know.”
Danielle said, “Your Honor, we think we have enough children to raise but thank you for your offer.”
Every one shook hands and then left the room leaving Dave and us to settle up. I said, “Dave how much do I owe you?”
“It is close to lunch time, you owe me a big steak at the hotel. Are you ready to settle up?”
“You are our guest Dave.”
After lunch, Danielle thanked Dave for the work he did for us and told him you are welcome at our house any time.
We drove to Mason; Danielle wanted to pick up a few things at the drug store. When I opened Danielle’s car door she got out holding Valery in her arms, I closed her door and opened the back door for the other three to get out. Little Paul needed help so I picked him up as we went into the drug store Mrs. Jensen said, “Danielle are you baby sitting today?”
Danielle said, “No, these are ours Valery, Becky, Terry, and Paul. We adopted a family, well actually two families.”
Mrs. Jensen’s mouth went open. She did not have anything to say or at least nothing came out of her mouth. Danielle said, “I may not be able to have our own. We adopted these and it didn’t take us five years either.”
Mr. Jensen said, “Danielle, you and Jake took on a real handful didn’t you? They are a beautiful addition to your family; will there be any more in your future?”
Danielle said, “No, Mr. Jensen these will be all for us.”
Danielle picked up a few things she needed and paid Mrs. Jensen for them, and as we were leaving Mrs. Jensen said, “I am glad for you Danielle. You have such well behaved children.”
“Thank you Mrs. Jensen.”
I loaded everyone in the car and Danielle turned around and counted noses then she said, “Kids, I am proud of all of you. We can go home now Jake.”
I just shook my head in amazement. I could not help myself; I asked Danielle, “What was that all about?”
“I just wanted to put the old gossip in her place, that’s all.”
When we pulled into the ranch all of the kids were a sleep, I carried them into the house while Danielle dressed them for bed and tucked all of them in. She said, “I feel good after putting Mrs. Jensen in her proper place. Would you like to sit down and have a cup of coffee with me before bed time love?”
“You read my mind Sweetheart. I’ll get the coffee you just relax till it’s done.”
When the coffee was finished perking I pored us a cup as we sat at the kitchen table to enjoy it I said, “Danielle, you’re one remarkable lady.”
By June, the ranches were running smoothly. We had the adoption papers back from the county along with the final support check. Becky and Paul, Well, they were ours complete with our last name. Danielle was spending most of her time with the children. They walked all over the ranch and had picnics.
I had Bob build two picnic tables and two fire pits for cooking at the reservoir. He piped water along the top of the dam and made holders for the garbage cans.
Jim Johnson took on the job of building an enclosed shed with glass windows at the bus stop, for the kids so they would be out of the weather when they waited for the bus to come and pick them up.
Danielle, Martha, and Sally spent a lot of time at the reservoir teaching the children how to swim and be safe around the water.
Jim built an outhouse near the reservoir; it doubled as a change room.
Our wives set up a ranch picnic at the reservoir on the fourth of July it turned out to be the biggest event of the year. Every one swam or just lay around enjoying the sun. The kids kept busy playing games.
I think the highlight was the fine food Ben and Luella prepared, they never let us run out of food or drinks.
September Danielle had to let up on Becky as she started school. Until the weather became too cold for the rest of the children, Danielle would lead the procession to the bus stop then bring the three little ones back to the house. They walked in a line behind Danielle, maybe she should have taught them to say quack, quack, quack.
When November came, the ranches started to wind down with the anticipation of the holiday season. Bob had three more horses broke for Valery, Paul, and Becky. I ordered three more saddles and bridles for Christmas. Terry had his horse from last year but he needed a larger saddle and other riding gear.
I bought Danielle a new Buick station wagon and she bought me a nice used 1942 Ford military jeep to rebuild. Christmas was a happy time for all of us on the ranches.
January we received a call from Dave Mosley saying we have four little Lance’s in the family now. Danielle could rest easy. Terry and Valery officially became Lance’s too.
March started the cycle all over again, the only thing different was the children. Danielle thought they kept her busy before spring. They were big enough to keep her constantly watching or running after them, they would take off in two or four different directions at the same time.
Becky and Valery found a place in one of Danielle’s gardens to play dolls on the weekend, which was all right, they were within the fenced area, but Terry and Paul were off exploring the barn, cook shack, or the horses. Danielle just could not keep up with them any longer. When I would catch up to the boys, we would go over and pester Ben. He would have a special treat of pie, cake, or rolls. Ben kept some hot chocolate mix just for the kids. He seemed to enjoy their company and always had time to spoil both of them.
The next year Terry went off to school with Becky. Then it was Paul’s turn to join his older brother and sister. Poor little Valery was the last to start school. She made up for the other three keeping Danielle on the run all day.
When Valery finally started school, Danielle acted as if she was lost. She had to find things to keep herself busy until the school bus came. Danielle never missed a day she did not watch the kids walk to the bus stop or waited on the porch to make sure all four of them got off the bus in the afternoon.
When they came into the house, she always had something special she baked or prepared for them. Danielle just seemed to be able to keep the children’s interest on their schoolwork and they were showing excellent grades.
One afternoon I went home early to be with the family as I came into the kitchen I heard a big commotion going on in the front room. I walked in to see Danielle on her hands and knees under the big coffee table, it was a large heavy table, and Danielle was stuck. The kids were laughing and making fun of her as she tried feverously to back out from under the table. I found out later the children had found a large horn toad and it got loose in the front room, Danielle was chasing it on her hand and knees on the floor when it went under the table she went after it and got herself stuck in the process. That was about the time when I came into the house. I held my finger over my lips and motioned for the children to be quiet. Danielle was using some colorful metaphors by this time. I got down behind Danielle and ran my hand up under her dress. She screamed and the children and I started to laugh at her. She said, “Jake Lance, you get me out from under this table before I turn it upside down and it gets broke.”
As I continued to laugh I stood up and picked up one end of the table far enough so she could back out from under it. I sat the table back down on the floor; she spun around on her knees and knocked me down on the floor and then she was all over me. Danielle was sitting in the middle of my stomach and beating my chest with her fist, her face was red as a beet, she yelled, “Damn you Jake Lance, I thought that horn toad crawled up my dress and was going to bite me, its not funny you big fool.”
The kids were still laughing at her, which did nothing for her sense of humor. I rolled Danielle over on her back and stood up reaching down to help her get up off the floor. I pulled her to me and gave her a big hug and a kiss. She said, “All of you are going to pay for this, just you wait and see.”
I said, “You kids catch that horn toad and get it out of the house before your mother gets any more upset.”
I took Danielle’s hand and led her into the kitchen as I sat her down in a chair I said, “Calm down, and I’ll get you some coffee.”
“It wasn’t funny Jake, I had visions it was going to bite it off.”
I started laughing again at her again; she said, “Damn you Jake, I’ll get even with you for that hand up my dress trick.”
I kissed her and said, “Why don’t you enjoy your coffee first.”
“Just for that you can do without.
I laughed at her and said, “That would be a first.”
Danielle started to laugh too, she said, “I am still mad at you, and you know I can’t stay mad for very long don’t you?”
I smiled at her then drank my coffee.
