(Early Married Life)
Danielle and I drove Uncle Rick and Aunt Dee to the airport two days after we were married. We hugged and kissed as we said goodbye to some great relatives. As to be expected, Aunt Dee was back to her old show. All we could say about her boiled down to one sentence, She was sure proud of those big tits of hers. When it came to Uncle Rick, he was tops in our book.
Moving into our new home was a total riot, Danielle would put things away in their proper places, and I would go back to the Home Ranch for another load. When I thought we had everything moved, Danielle went back with me to clean up the house. As we were cleaning, Danielle looked under the kitchen sink and came un-glued. “Jake Lance; you forgot to bring my pots and pans!”
“I thought you bought new ones?”
“Jake; I am not going to start kicking my new pans around on the floor.”
“Damn it Jake, you are going to learn I have a long memory.”
She gave me that beautiful smile of hers. “Now, that’s more like it.”
As I was standing there looking like a lost pup, Danielle walked over to me and wrapped her arms around my neck. “That’s what I like about you Jake. If you promise me not to come home drunk again I’ll leave them here.”
She kissed me saying, “I love you Mr. Lance.”
“I promise Mrs. Jake Lance.”
Danielle smiled again, “I love my new name Mr. Lance.”
As we pulled away from the Home Ranch she said, “I am going to miss this place as much as I miss the cabin up at Cow Camp but I won’t forget where I left those pots and pans.”
When we parked in front of our new house I said, “After we bring the cows home from Cow Camp this November would you like to go back up to the cabin and do a little hunting for elk? We could have a belated honey moon.”
She replied Jake; “I thought you would never ask, do you think it will snow?”
On the Fourth of July, we decided to take a little break. We asked Bob and Martha if they would like to go for a swim in the new Reservoir.
Martha said, “We would love to.”
“Danielle said, “Be sure you bring Eddie, (their son), along.”
Martha brought the sandwiches and we took cold drinks and some blankets to sit on. We spent about five hours and enjoyed each other’s company while watching Eddie swim.
Bob and I sat and talked most of the time. I told Bob and Martha about what Uncle Paul Olmsted told us the day of our wedding. Martha sat there in total disbelief when she heard Uncle Paul and Grandpa John were brothers. She said, “Grandpa John’s last name was Russell.”
“Uncle Paul was so mad at Grandpa John he changed his last name to Olmsted because he didn’t want to be associated with the family name of Russell. It happened so many years ago that no one could remember that is,,, except for Dave Mosley! He has kept his mouth shut all of these years and if it hadn’t been for Uncle Paul getting terminally ill, I would have never learned the truth.”
Bob said, “All of that hate over a woman neither of them married.”
“Bob, he has brought on some more challenges for us, what are we going to do with that much extra land?”
“I can’t see it just sitting there going to waste as it’s done for the past forty years. The land is mostly flat and quite a bit of it is good bottom meadow.”
I said, “The land along the river could be brought back for meadow grass for the horses, perhaps some could be planted in alfalfa and the rest could be used for cows during the winter feeding season.”
“If we could pick up more grazing land from the government we would be in like Flynn but if not the place would have to hold cattle year round. It would mean we will have to produce enough hay to keep them there.”
“Bob, we are looking down the road a while, and it will need a lot of thought. I wonder if Jack would be up to the added work or should we move him on the new property and hire a new foreman for the Bailey Ranch?”
“What do you say; we ask Jack and let him make up his own mind?”
“Bob it’s a good thing I have you around here; I need you more than ever. Are you up to taking on more responsibility?”
“What do you have in mind Jake?”
“I will need you to run this whole mess for me and you will answer to no one except me. Your decisions will be law to the rest of the foremen. Would you and Martha like to stay where you are, or will you need a larger house? Either way we will have to build a new house for a new foreman.”
“Let us think about it for a while.”
“You and I will need to put Jack on the spot before long let’s go for a swim.”
Our day finally ended and we drove Bob, Martha, and Eddie back to their house.
I said, “We should put our foremen in line for promotion first and then hire a new man for Cow Camp.”
“It would be fair to the men.”
“Thank you Bob, Martha make sure Bob makes the right decision for you too.”
We were settled into our new house and wouldn’t have to eat our meals at the cook shack. It was on the eighth of July when Danielle finally fixed her first supper for us. I think she was pleased with herself; we had steak, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and biscuits. For dessert, we had fresh apple pie and ice cream. Danielle really loved her new bedroom; it was the larger of the two on the main floor. It is a good thing our bedroom was as big as it was and the closet was a large walk in. I never saw so many women’s clothes in one place except for the store in Deming. We made up that night for lost time; our lovemaking was perfect and lasted long into the late hours.
We woke up early, while Danielle made the coffee she said, “Jake, I need to go to town for some things I don’t have, will you drive me to Mason so I can do some shopping?”
“I would love to. We can drink our coffee here Mrs. Lance then I will buy you the best breakfast in town.”
“Can I consider it a date?”
“Danielle you can consider it any damn thing you well please; I’m starved after last night.”
“A little testy this morning are we?”
“No, Sweetheart I’m hungry.”
“Forget the coffee let’s get going for town, I’m starved too”
When we pulled up to the best restaurant in town I went around and opened Danielle’s car door for her to get out, as I closed it I slipped my arm around her waist and said, “Are you ready to eat breakfast Mrs. Lance?”
“Mr. Lance, I would be honored to have your company at my table for breakfast.”
I removed my arm and gave her a little swat on her soft butt. “You first love.”
She turned around and said, “Fresh,”
She kissed me and then said, “We’re messing around to much out here, I’m hungry.”
“After you Sweetheart.”
During breakfast we talked about what needed done and where she had to go as we ate.
I said, “We need to go over to the county building if you still think the school bus and fire trucks are important to us.”
“I think it is very important to all of us Jake.”
We decided the drug store, hardware store, county building, and grocery store, before we could go back home and in that order.
We went to the drug store while Danielle went shopping I chit chatted with Mr. Jensen, a nice old man although I believe he is a little henpecked, until Danielle was ready to check out. When she came to Mrs. Jensen’s counter, Mrs. Jensen started a conversation with Danielle about our wedding and our plans for the future. When Mrs. Jensen came to the feminine pads, she glanced up at me, “Are you planning on having children Danielle?”
Danielle replied, “Some day we hope to but, right now we are letting Mother Nature have her own way. We are not in any hurry, there is a lot of things we need to do but you never know.”
What Danielle had to say seemed to satisfy Mrs. Jensen for now. As we left the store Mrs. Jensen said, “We’ll see you next week Danielle, keep Jake fed well for you know what.”
“I will Mrs. Jensen.”
Next was the hardware store, both of us needed some things as we separated. When we were finished shopping, we came back to the counter. The young girl checking us out said, “Mrs. Lance, I was the one who caught your bouquet at your wedding, it was a real gas, I mean the food and all, congratulations.”
Danielle asked her, “What, is your name.”
“Peggy, perhaps we can attend your wedding some day.”
“Thank you Mrs. Lance.”
It was time to go over to the county building. As we walked in we went to Pete Stover’s office, (he is the County Commissioner who is over our district).
Mr. Stover stood up as we walked into his office. “Jake, Danielle, what can I do for you today?”
“Pete, I have a couple of propositions to run by you. I hear the old Sander’s place sold and the new owners want to subdivide it into ten acre parcels?”
Pete said, “At this time, we had to decline on the matter.”
I replied, “The reasons are, the lack of fire protection and transportation for the children to and from school. Is that right?”
“You are well informed on the subject Jake.”
“First, this is what I will propose to the county. I will provide for a two stall Volunteer Fire Department building at the Bell Brand Ranch. I have enough men to man it twenty-four hours a day and three hundred sixty five days a year. I ask only that the county supply the two fire trucks and training for the volunteer fire fighters.”
Pete said, “That is a tall order Jake.”
“Pete you know back in Grandpa John’s day this would not have been an issue but times are changing much more rapidly today and we can’t afford to fall any further behind.”
“I agree with your statement Jake.”
“Secondly, we will need the involvement of the County School District in this matter. The road has been straightened, asphalted and is an all weather road fifteen miles above the Bell Brand.”
“I am aware of that to Jake.”
“If the School Board will provide a bus driver, we will buy the county a new school bus. Perhaps a teacher or a parent towards the end of the pavement could drive the new bus. It would cut expenses and repair cost. The subdivision will provide in time about ten families and maybe with two or three children each. I can use good men on my ranches and I wouldn’t have to provide housing. It will bring in revenue for the county and cut some of my overhead. Right now I have six or seven families on our ranches with children, say ten to twelve children.”
“You are asking for a lot Jake, would you be willing to bring this matter before the County Commissioners at their regular monthly meeting?” Pete looked down at his calendar and said, “On the twentieth at nine o’clock and will you be willing to make a presentation at the meeting if I get the School Board members there?”
“Is that final Pete?”
“Guaranteed, it will be on the agenda next meeting.”
“I will be there with as much information as I can gather up. I will have to set up a meeting of the people in our area and get as many here as possible.”
“Jake, I like your plan, the bus won’t be cheap you know. If you can bring a letter signed by those people affected, they won’t have to be present at the Commissioner’s meeting.”
I said, “Pete, this is one way for Danielle and me to pay the community back for treating us so good over the years.”
“I will do as much as I can to push your proposal through.”
“If there are any changes call me at the Bell Brand, thank you for your time.”
Pete and I shook hands. When we were outside of the building Danielle said, “That was a good speech Jake; you should involve yourself into politics.”
“Not me, they are all a bunch of damned crooks.”
We had only one stop left on our list and that was the grocery store; as we went in Danielle pushed a cart in my direction and took another. “Are we going to buy the whole store out?”
She smiled and said, “Close to it, just follow me.”
When we checked out Tom Shiver (the storeowner) said, “Jake I see you brought the Mrs. Shopping today.”
“I got roped into it Tom.”
“It was a lovely wedding, you two sure disappeared fast.”
“Something came up unexpectedly.”
“I saw him leaning on his cane.”
“I didn’t expect Paul to show up at our wedding. He wanted to see his old house again, I hope he approved.”
“It’s a shame he has been so bitter toward your family over the years.”
“Tom, I hope we finally put that old feud to rest.”
Danielle said, “I am ready, we can go now.”
Tom said, “Mrs. Lance I didn’t get to meet you last Saturday, my name is Tom Shiver.”
“Tom it is nice to meet you, please just call me Danielle.”
We loaded the car with the groceries and headed back home. I said, “We will have to contact every one on our end of the valley about the county meeting and we should have a meeting before hand to see what the people would like.”
“Let’s get busy doing it tomorrow.”
Tuesday Danielle and I went out to contact our neighbors about the Volunteer Fire Dept. and School bus. Every one who we talked to was in favor of it and we set a time for our neighbors to meet at our house on Friday evening at six o’clock. Danielle wrote a letter to the County Commissioners and to the School Board; to be signed by all who would show up on Friday.
I made contact with Bob and told him we had better go see Jack Snow about the new land. He said, “We better get him thinking about it right away.”
“Do you have the time; we can go over and see him?”
We piled into Bob’s pickup and he drove us over to the Bailey Ranch. We pulled up and went into the office. Jack said, “To what do I owe so much attention?”
Bob said with a smile, “Are you ready to move Jack?”
Jack got a blank look on his face then said, “Just what have you two cooked up for me this time?”
I said, “Jack we have some things to run by you but, we won’t need an answer right away.”
“Ok, boys lets have it.”
“It’s not final yet but Paul Olmsted signed the property across from the Bell Brand over to Danielle and me at our wedding.”
“So that is what the old buzzard was up to?”
“Jack we found out Paul and Grandpa John were or are brothers.”
Jack said, “Well, I’ll be damned.”
“Jack; I asked Bob if he would consider becoming the boss over the ranches and the other foremen, and if this all comes about; well its getting to big for me to handle by myself any more. We thought you might be interested in running the new place. We will need to turn it into a first class hay and cattle ranch.”
Bob said, “There is some good bottom land along the river, it would support a lot of meadow grass for the horses and most of the flat area could be put into alfalfa. The rest we could run cattle on year round if we can’t obtain grazing rights from the government.”
“Boys, where do you expect to get that much water?”
“Jack, we can try some of those new pivot sprinkler systems. It would mean having wells dug and diesel powered generators to run the pumps.”
Bob said, “We believe we can increase the amount of alfalfa per acre over the walking sprinklers you are using here.”
“What are you going to do with this place?”
“Can you recommend one of your men to foreman it, or do you want to run both places?”
Jack replied, “At my age, one place is about all I will be able to handle. I have just the man for the job, Bill Roberts.”
“Is Bill the man you were talking about being your assistant when we upgraded your sprinklers?”
“Yes, he is a good man and knows this ranch.”
I said, “Check his pulse about taking over the ranch and let me know what his decision is.”
“How long before this all takes place?”
“As soon as I have the deed delivered.”
“Count me in boys as long as I get a new house for Edna.”
Bob said, “Tell Edna as soon as she sees the new house start to be built, she can start packing.”
I said, “I want those pivots marked out and the wells dug hopefully before winter sets in. You will have to get over to the Deming Farm Supply and talk to George Sims about helping you lay out the pivots. I need to know how many so I can contact the well drillers.”
Jack said, “You two teamed up on me didn’t you?”
Bob said, “We just needed to know if you would pack your bags or not.”
“You two are always full of little surprises when you get together. When you get the deed ill be ready.”
“You are on your own Jack we’ll see you later.”
As Bob and I drove towards the Bell Brand. “Bob we had better stop and scare hell out of Jim.”
We told Jim about the same things we told Jack and then Bob said, “Jim, are you about ready to move to the Bell Brand?”
He said, “I’ll tell Sally to pack her bags as soon as you say move.”
I said, “Jim, we will let you know soon.”
On the way back to the Bell Brand I said, “Bob have you and Martha made up your minds about what you want as far as a house goes?”
“Martha wants to stay where she is; she said I am within walking distance to Danielle’s house.”
“Call Mack and get him started on a house for Jim and Sally, you will have to pick a spot for it.”
He said, “I’ll call him tonight.”
“By the way Bob, have him build you a new office, a large one, you are going to have to move your cubby hole out of your house. Just make sure I have a room too, chances are Danielle won’t want me under foot either. We can consider ourselves evicted.”
“What do you think about building the office half way between my house and the cook shack?”
“Good idea Bob, when we’re not working we can sneak over to the cook shack for some of Ben’s hot pies and coffee.”
“What do you think about building Jim’s house to the west of the cook shack? He could still walk to the office.”
“Add another room to the office for Jim.”
“I like the design of my house should we build Jims the same?”
“Sounds good to me.”
As we pulled up, Bob said, “Are you ready for coffee?”
“Let’s go tease Ben for a while.”
As we drank our coffee and ate a piece of peach pie I said, “When Mack gets Jims house built we had better go and lay out the Snow Ranch he can build Jack a house like Jim’s.”
“I think Jack will like the name you chose for the ranch.”
“I hope he will.”
As we left the cook shack I said, “Bob perhaps you should move the office a little closer to my house then I won’t have so far to walk to work.”
Bob said as he raised his hand into the air and folded his fingers down, “Read between the lines Jake.”
“Have it your way then?”
I went home, Danielle met me at the door; she was all smiles and said, “Your coffee sir.”
I took the cup from her and wrapped my arm around her waist; we walked together into the kitchen to drink our coffee. Danielle said, “I think you better take this chair.”
After I took a look around. “Is this the best seat in the house?”
She pulled the chair out for me to sit down. “The best.”
I sat down; she turned around, and sat down on my lap. “You need a little attention Sweetheart?”
She looked up at me and smiled as she said, “It’s almost time to feed the baby.”
She pulled her titty out of her blouse. “This is as good a place as anywhere darling.”
As I put her titty in my mouth I heard her sigh and then she started to squirm, I think she gets off rubbing around on my hard dick. As she squirmed on my lap, I sucked on her hard nipple until she had her climax. I said, “Are you ready for the bedroom?”
“I went off in my panties, would you like some pussy?”
“If you are through, I would sure like it sucked.”
She stood up and pulled me out of my chair as she led me into our bedroom.
“How did you know I wanted to suck on it?”
While my body slowly recovered and my legs quit shaking. Danielle stood up and raised her dress then pulled her panties down and kicked them off her feet. She turned around and put her knees on the floor. “Jake take me hard I need you in my pussy, O Jake, fuck me.”
As I did, she started to climax. “Harder Jake hard as you can.”
I felt her take it all then she was finished. As she started to relax, I gave her a few more pumps. She said, “Again, Jake, give it all to me.”
My cock was slowly starting to go soft. Danielle said, “Jake, when you get that big dick out of my pussy will you pull my knees back together then come around here and help me up, I’m stuck.”
As I backed my cock out of her, I pulled her knees closer together. I stood up and went around to the front of her. As she looked up, I held my soft cock in front of her. She said, “Damn it Jake, help me up I’ll play with it later.”
As I helped her to her feet, she said, “I was really in trouble Jake, I was on my knees, and they were spread wide open, I think my pussy is still wide open.”
“So is your mouth would you like me to fill it?”
“Right now, I would probably bite it.”
“Look at the mess you left on the floor.”
“Take my panties and wipe it up I haven’t cum that much in a long time.”
“It was quite a load Sweetheart.”
She limped over to the bed and lay down as I wiped up the mess from the floor. I sat down on the edge of the bed and leaned over to kiss her. She said, “I still hurt then she smiled and said but it felt so good.”
“Would you like some more coffee?”
“Just as soon as I can get there, I need it.”
I stood up and held my limp cock out to her. “Not that Jake, I need coffee.”
I said, “Can I help you?”
She sat up and took my arm as she said, “I’ll make it, you had better pull your pants up before you trip over them, and I have to pick you up.”
I pulled my pants up and buttoned them. Then I helped her back to the kitchen. Danielle said, “Thank you Sweetie I feel much better now.”
After we drank our coffee I said, “Are you ready to do it again?”
“Not for a while I don’t.”
“I’ll fix supper for us.”
“It is in the oven I hope it is still warm.”
We washed up at the sink; I dished up the meatloaf and baked potatoes, then brought the salad to the table. When we finished eating I said, “You sit still and I’ll put things away.”
After I finished cleaning things up I said, “Darling, let’s go to bed.”
“Lead the way Jake.”
After we used the bathroom and crawled into bed naked she cuddled up close to me, I kissed her beautiful lips as she wiggled her clitoris against my leg I said, “Feel this one.”
She laughed. “It’s not much bigger than mine.”
“I still love you.”
We went to sleep in each other’s arms.
Friday came much too quickly I got up and dressed. Danielle was sleeping so peacefully I did not have the heart to wake her. I snuck out of the house and headed for the cook shack when I came in, there sat Bob. I went over and sat down across from him. “Bob you are up early this morning.”
“I got to thinking about what we have going and I couldn’t sleep.”
“I think I have a little case of it myself this morning.”
“Mack was going to get things ready to start building the houses and the office today which should give me a chance to discuss the Snow Ranch house with him.”
“If things go good with my proposal and our neighbors are receptive to it, I would feel more comfortable going before the County Commissioners next Friday.”
“If the county goes for it how soon before they will want the fire house finished?”
“We may have to get Mack right on it to show good faith.”
That evening there were about twenty families represented at the meeting, all signed the letter to the County Commissioners and to the School Board. I felt better about things now.
Over the next week, Bob and Jack worked together like a pair of draft horses as they started to bring things together. I received a call from Dave Mosley saying the deed to the property had cleared. I told him we could meet in his office on Thursday, as Danielle needed to go to the bank. “When you get here just walk on in.”
I told Bob the Snow Ranch is ready to go. “I’ll get everyone involved especially Jack, he still doesn’t know what you called the new Ranch.”
Thursday morning Danielle and I started for Deming, she had to get her savings and checking accounts straightened out as well as her new name. She needed to put her money into her savings account and I needed to talk to Dave. We came into town at nine thirty; she let me out at Dave’s office then she started for the bank. I said, “When you finish come back here just in case we need you for something.”
I went in to see Dave. We shook hands, “Dave, you were sure closed mouth about Grandpa John and Paul Olmsted for a long time, why?”
“Jake they swore me to secrecy that day, they were both my clients and I couldn’t say anything to anyone.”
“Dave you stood by your word, they trusted you.”
“Here is your deed, what are you going to do with it?”
“Things are already under way; do you need Danielle to sign anything?”
“No, you have it all in your hand.”
“Thank you Dave”
I shook his hand then went out side to wait for Danielle. When she drove up and stopped she said, “Why, Mr. Lance, imagine seeing you here would you like to go to lunch with me?”
“What would my wife, say if she saw us together.”
“I don’t think she would be too jealous do you?”
“I’ll never tell if you don’t.”
I got into the car and she drove over to the hotel for our lunch. Danielle told me how things went at the bank. “We have to be in Mason tomorrow at nine for the meeting. I brought the letters our neighbors signed, suppose we drop them off at Pete’s office before we go back home.”
When we arrived in Mason, Danielle stopped in front of Pete’s office and I took the letters in and gave them to his secretary. I missed him as he was in a meeting.
When we went back to the Bell Brand, Danielle dropped me off at the cook shack to join Bob. He was walking in that general direction and waived at us. Bob and I went in and sat down for coffee, he updated me on his progress; I don’t remember ever seeing him so excited over a new project. “Jake, it occurred to me yesterday, our telephone system is way out dated; do you think we could get the phone company to bring us into this century?”
“Bob, it never occurred to me, I‘ve been so use to the old system
it just never crossed my mind. I think you’re probably right.”
“You and Danielle have a meeting to go to tomorrow don’t you?”
“I hope it will go off with out a hitch.”
Bob said, “The reservoir is holding well and the springs seem to have enough water running from them to keep the reservoir full.”
After we finished our business, we called it a day we were both tired.
Danielle and I ate early and turned in but woke up around five in the morning. I leaned over Danielle and gave her a kiss. She smiled and said, “Do we have time for a quickie?”
I gave her another kiss. “We will take the time.”
We made love then went to the bathroom to take our showers, as we were standing under the stream of hot water she said, “I’ll scrub your back if you will scrub mine.”
When Danielle finished washing my back I said, “Turn around and I will wash yours.”
She smiled and turned around I lathered her back and started to wash her as I moved down to the top of her hips she wiggled that butt of hers. I could not resist the temptation and slid my hand down to her pussy and inserting my finger deep into her. As she started to have her orgasm I reached around to cup one of those nice titties of hers and squeezed her nipple as her climax intensified she backed up against my hard cock and wiggled her butt again. I removed my finger from her pussy and replaced it with my stiff cock, in just a few minutes we both got off. She said as she turned her head towards me, “Do we have time for another quickie?”
“We better save something for tonight.”
We dried and dressed for the trip to town. We drank our coffee and ate some toast then we grabbed our papers and headed for the door. When we arrived in Mason, I parked the car in front of the town hall; we went into the Commissioners meeting room and took our seats to wait for our turn to be recognized. As I looked around the room I saw people there who I didn’t recognize, I was starting to get a little nervous as I told Danielle, “I don’t recognize most of these people.”
Pete looked at us and said, “We have a proposal to be discussed before the County Commissioners by some of our ranching neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lance.”
As I started to rise from my seat I felt a hand on my arm, I hesitated and looked into Danielle’s eyes as she said, “Jake sit down this one’s mine.”
When she stood up, Pete said, “It looks like Danielle Lance is going to give the presentation today; she is new to our community. Danielle is the new owner of the Bell Brand Ranch.” As he started to clap his hands together, the rest of the room joined in. Danielle came before the podium and gave a remarkable speech about us needing a Volunteer Fire Department and school bus for our children. Also of our offer to buy a new School Bus for the School District at our expense, she said we will build a fire station on the Bell Brand Ranch. The room stood up and the clapping started again. When the room came back to normal, Pete stood up and introduced the County Fire Chief, Jack Mackie. Mr. Mackie said, “We need our fire protection to reach out in your direction therefore I would like to say we will station two fire trucks you have asked for and a support tanker truck to carry water to replenish the fire trucks on location. We will further supply training and turn out gear for ten people.”
He sat down and Pete introduced the School Board members, as their spokesperson stood up, Mrs. Ratcliff was introduced. She said, “The Deming School District notified us they took delivery of one to many busses and offered one of them to us if we wanted it. Their representative drove it over here for us to look at as well as a price quote, that is, if we were interested. The cost to us would be cheaper than if we ordered it ourselves. The cost to the School District would be $xxxxx.xx dollars, would this price be satisfactory to you Mrs. Lance?”
Danielle said, “I will write you a check before we leave this room.”
Clapping again broke out as Mrs. Ratcliff sat down. Pete said, “I would like to introduce Miss Edgars, representing the EMT staff from the Deming Hospital.”
When Miss Edgars stood up, she said, “If we can train a minimum of three people as EMTs, in your area the County Hospital Board will station one of our extra Ambulances at the new Volunteer Fire Department. These people will need to be trained at the Deming Hospital and will require them to spend about a week with us, maybe more.”
Pete said, “Mrs. Lance, it appears your proposal and most generous offer to the County has been unanimously accepted by all concerned, is there anything else you would like to add before we move on to other business?”
Danielle said, “I would like to thank Chief Mackie, Mrs. Ratcliff, Miss Edgars, and Mr. Stover for your kind support in this matter.”
Pete’s gavel came down as he said, “Carried.”
The room again stood up and clapping commenced. As Mr. Stover again banged his gavel for quiet he said, “Thank you Mrs. Lance and now on to other business.”
Danielle ran to me wrapping her arms around me we kissed. Danielle wrote out the check handing it to Mrs. Ratcliff. She took my hand in hers and said, “Lets go home Jake it’s been a trying morning.”
As we left the room I said, “Danielle, you did a remarkable presentation in there, I am proud of you.”
“I believe it was all cut and dried before hand.”
“Without you, the whole thing would have gone down the drain.”
She said, “Do you really believe that?”
“Yes I do Sweetheart.”
When we arrived home, we stopped to see Bob and Martha, Danielle explained what had happened in Mason, she was so excited I let her have the day. I told Bob, “You need to talk to Mack and change the fire house to include four bays and a meeting room in the rear.”
Danielle said, “Martha would you be interested in joining me and become an EMT?”
“Yes, do you think Sally and Edna would go along with us?”
Danielle said, “Let’s go and talk to them.”
They disappeared. Then Bob said, “We are on the fast track around here now Jake.”
“As soon as we finish Jacks new house move him. And as soon as Jim’s house is completed, have him move. Then we can shuffle the rest of the foremen.”
“Excuse me Jake; you lost me on the last turn.”
“I will try to fill you in as best I can. Jack Snow will need to move to the Snow Ranch and Bill Roberts will move into Jacks old house. As soon as we can get Jim Johnson moved over here, we can bring Joe Nathan down from Cow Camp to the Sorensen Ranch. That will only let us find a man to replace Joe and when the new man comes back from Cow Camp; we can move him into my old house at the Home Ranch.”
Bob said, “Jake, I am sure glad you have this all figured out.”
“Bob any spare men we have will have to become moving men, we have a lot of moving before the cattle get here the first of November and the haying is finished. Bill Roberts is going to have to start humping it around the Bailey Ranch he can contact Jack if he has any problems. I will need you to go up to Cow Camp, and make sure Joe is ready and pick a man to take his place. We should be able to get by with the men we have and perhaps you will need to hold more of your boys over the winter, the rest you can lay off until spring. Remember, March the first. Now Bob, let’s go over to the cook shack, and get some of Ben’s pie and coffee.”
Bob said, “We have moved so many men I have built up a tremendous appetite; I think we should eat two pieces of Ben’s pie.”
“Bob how fast can you run?”
With that said, I was out of the door and the race was on for the cook shack, Bob beat me by about ten feet as he stopped to hold the door open for me I ran past him and yelled, “I win.”
Bob yelled back, “In a pig’s eye you did.”
With all of the commotion going on, Ben ducked down behind the counter; he must have been expecting things to start flying. I said, “Ben; do you have four pieces of pie and two cups of coffee?”
As Ben stood back up he said, “Just the two of you?”
I said, “Ben, bring three cups and six pieces of pie your invited.”
When Danielle and Martha came back home, they were like a couple of kids that had been to a birthday party. Sally and Edna agreed to join them to become EMTs. They were looking forward to their training in Deming. This would be their week of vacation, away from ranches and husbands.
Things finally started to get back to what I would call normal around the ranches. The well drillers finished the well for the Snow Ranch house. Our wife’s were back from Deming, they all passed their EMT classes the week before. Jim Johnson’s house was finished, and they started to move in. Jack called to say Edna was packing her bags, as their house would be finished next week.
As Danielle and I stood in the front porch doorway leading down to her flower gardens, our arms were around each other. We looked out across the highway toward the Snow Ranch, where the masts of three well drilling rigs slowly drilled the wells for the new pivots. It was Tuesday the twenty second of August. The morning air was a little on the cool side at about eight o’clock in the morning but was welcomed. By ten o’clock, we knew the temperature would be in the high eighties and would climb into the nineties by noon. We were discussing the month and a half we have been married and how fast the time passed by, when we heard the fire siren in Mason starting up. (The siren was a war surplus air raid unit donated by the army to the town of Mason). The sound intensified as it turned faster until it would peak out in a waling sound, it was quite loud even where we lived, three miles away. We stood there waiting, looking for smoke that would identify where the fire was. About a half mile from Mason, the highway made a bend toward our place although we were unable to see the town from here. We could hear more sirens and now we could see red flashing lights coming around the bend in the road they were coming our way.
We looked up the road to see if we could see smoke above the ranch but we could not see anything happening. I said, “Danielle, I had better get the men mounted up this must be a big one.”
As I ran to the other end of the porch and out into the back yard, the men were already starting to load up the pickups with the portable tanks and pumps. The rest of our men came out of the cook shack and the bunkhouse as our wives joined us we could see two sheriffs cars an ambulance, six fire trucks, a bright yellow school bus and their must have been at least twenty or so cars and pickups behind them. The sirens and red lights were all on and the other cars were blinking their lights on and off. As they approached the Bell Brand gate, they slowed and turned into the driveway. They stopped in the parking area, as the sirens quieted down people got out of their vehicles. Pete Stover and the Sheriff were in the first car, when they walked up to us, Pete said, “Danielle we brought you your new equipment you asked for is the fire house finished yet?”
Everyone was still a little in shocked but Danielle said, “Thank you Mr. Stover”
As she put her arms around him the news reporter took pictures and we could see every one start to relax. She said, “The fire house is ready and so are our EMTs.”
We saw a pickup backing towards the firehouse, when it stopped; Chief Mackie stepped out and said, “Since this is the Bell Brand Ranch. I brought along the old bell from the school house when it was torn down and the new school was built.”
More pictures were taken of the new EMTs and the ambulance, the firehouse, school bus, and the crowd of people. Everyone took a tour of the new building. By ten o’clock, the cars started to go back to Mason leaving us to go back to our normal routine. I said, “Bob this has been one exciting morning.”
He replied, “I have never seen this much excitement in one place.”
I hugged Danielle and said, “Let’s go back to work,”
The fun was over as we walked back to the house with our arms around each other. She said, “That was exciting.”
“It was down right scary Mrs. Lance.”
The following year the ranches were all up to expectations.
Jack was in his own little world; the Snow ranch was producing hay better than the Bailey Ranch was. We built two pole storage sheds to keep the hay out of the weather; they were fifty feet wide and two hundred feet long. We added a scale house to weight incoming trucks to make sure they didn’t’ exceed the road weight limits when they left the loading area. We had trucks to pick up the bails in the field and stacked the bails when they came back to the sheds. We could hold about five hundred cows over the winter on the Snow Ranch and we picked up more summer grazing rights.
The Bailey Ranch produced most of the hay we needed for the winter, the rest came from the Snow Ranch.
The Sorensen ranch had enough water to hold the cattle year round now that the reservoir stayed full.
The Home Ranch took care of the bulls. We built a bunkhouse, cook shack and hired a cook for them. Chris is happy with his bulls; he acts more like an old hen with a new hatch of chicks. His wife Pam fits right in with the rest of the wives.
Jim has his hands full with the Bell Brand cattle and the herd of horses.
Bob, as usual was right in the thick of things. He spends more time on the phone and going around to other ranches checking on the other foremen’s needs, and then trying to locate it for them.
I take care of the finances and book work. When Bob and I have a little spare time we head over to the cook shack and pester Ben, I think Ben looks forward to us coming over. He always seems to have a ready supply of pie and coffee for us.
Bob and I decided we would call it a day and go home early. Danielle and I were sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and talking about the way the ranches had improved when the phone rang, I answered saying, “Bell Brand, Jake.”
The man’s voice said, “Hello Jake, this is Doctor Phillips may I speak to Danielle, I need to confirm her appointment for next Tuesday.”
As I handed Danielle the phone and said, “Doctor Phillips would like to talk to you.”
Danielle took the phone. “Doctor Phillips this is Danielle.”
They talked for a while then she said, “Yes, Doctor Phillips we will be in your office at ten on Tuesday for my appointment, thank you for calling.”
When she hung up the phone then said, “Doctor Phillips would like to talk to both of us about a new procedure.”
I told Bob, Danielle had a doctor’s appointment in Deming this coming Tuesday; we would be gone for the day. Bob said, “I can handle things around here for one day by myself.”
“Thank you Bob.”
The next morning around ten o’clock, I was walking to the ranch office and saw Jim Johnson going into the cook shack. I followed him in and the two of us sat down for a cup of coffee. Bob was working in the office and we planned to join him there later. The county dispatch called the office saying there was a fire at the Sander’s sub division above the Bell Brand Ranch.
Bob ran to the firehouse and started pulling on the bell rope sounding the emergency alarm, within a few minutes the entire ranch responded. Bob gave directions to the men, our two fire trucks were on the way with a crew of eight men.
We heard the fire siren start up in Mason as our tanker crew and three portables on ranch pickups were leaving for the fire. Bob told Martha, Sally, and Danielle to take the ambulance to the fire and stand by just incase they were needed. Bob, Jim, and I took my pickup and followed the ambulance. When we arrived on the scene, we could see the fire had already jumped over the county road and was burning toward two of the houses in the sub division. Our portables made short work of where the fire started on the east side of the county road, our fire trucks took up positions at each of the houses.
Fire Chief Mackie was the first to arrive from Mason and took charge directing the fire crews. When the Mason fire fighters arrived Chief Mackie directed them to the Neil house, one wall of the house was on fire and was controlled within minutes after their arrival.
Mrs. Neil starting into her eighth month of pregnancy went into premature labor and collapsed in the front yard. Chief Mackie called our ambulance crew on the radio to respond to the Neil house. Mrs. Neil was loaded into the ambulance with our EMT’s and sent to the hospital in Deming. On the way, Mrs. Neil gave birth to a healthy six pound four ounce baby girl.
That evening Danielle and I were seated at the dining room table drinking our coffee when she started to tell me about when Jennifer was born in the ambulance. “Jake, it was so beautiful when her little head came out into the world I caught her in my hands. It was as if she became part of me. The part of me that could never be but I was there for Jennifer and her mother when she was born. You should have heard her scream; there is nothing wrong with that girl’s lungs.”
I knew from the sound in Danielle’s voice, deep down she wished it could have been her giving birth to a new life. I said, “Sweetheart, it is as close as it will ever be.”
Danielle stood up from her chair and came around the table sat down on my lap, put her head down on my shoulder, and started to cry. When she finally stopped crying she looked up at me and said, “Jake, I will never forget the love Mrs. Neil had in her eyes for little Jennifer.”
The newspaper reporter from Mason wrote a fine article, complete with pictures on the front page of the local newspaper, the article was giving the day to our ambulance, EMT crew, and Volunteer Fire Departments fast response along with a picture of Mrs. Neil and her new daughter, Jennifer.
By the time, Mrs. Neil and Jennifer returned home from the hospital in Deming, the surrounding community had volunteered labor and materials to rebuild the burned out wall of their house.
Jim Johnson found out Bill Neil was an unemployed mechanic and asked Bob and me if we could use a full time mechanic on the ranches. Bob hired Bill and had him take over the mechanic shop at the Sorensen Ranch. I bought a used two-ton mechanics truck from the local power company complete with a hydraulic crane and toolboxes. Bill fit right in and has been so busy running here and there on the ranches; I doubt his pants will ever catch up to his backside.
Tuesday, Danielle and I drove over to Deming, when we arrived Doctor Phillips was in his office and motioned for us to come in, as we went into his office I closed the door behind me.
Doctor Phillips asked Danielle how she was feeling then gave her the once over and said, “I need you to go down to the Lab for some test they are expecting you.”
When we came back to his office he said, “I received a letter from Doctor Hansen in Stockholm, he wanted me to explain a new procedure with you they are working on.”
Danielle was acting a little uneasy as she sat down to listen to what Doctor Phillips had to say.
Doctor Phillips said, “Danielle, as you know a transsexual person’s gender identity is opposite to his or her biological sex. Many feel they are trapped in the wrong body, such as yourself. This condition is called, Gender Dysphoria. In other words, you feel you are a woman who by some strange quirk of nature was provided with male genitals. This new procedure is called Sex-reassignment. You have already gone through extensive screening, hormone therapy, estrogen injections, and testosterone blocking drugs to be who you are and that is what you are here for today.”
Danielle agreed with Doctor Phillips’s explanation of her condition.
Doctor Phillips continued, he said, “Doctor Hansen said they are experimenting with genital altering surgery, that is, where the scrotum and penis are removed and a vagina is created through reconstruction of the pelvic tissue. Doctor Hansen said care is taken to save the sensory nerves of the penis; this tissue is relocated to the inside of the newly fashioned vagina. With artificial lubrication, normal intercourse is possible. Some male-to-female transsexuals say they experience sexual arousal and orgasms. Take a look at the photos Doctor Hansen sent along with his letter.”
As he handed them to Danielle, I leaned over to take a look. What I saw in the pictures seemed to look like the real thing.
Danielle looked at me and shook her head, she said, “I don’t feel like I want to go through that much pain and suffering. Doctor Phillips, Jake and I have worked out our sexual problems as far as our sex life is concerned and we are content with the way things are. Besides, I don’t want to be away from Jake that long. I get cold when I sleep alone.”
Doctor Phillips looked up at me. I shook my head and said, “I believe we have things under control as they are.”
Doctor Phillips said, “I am glad you are satisfied with the way things are between the both of you. I have been reading about these operations and personally, I would not recommend this procedure at this point in time, mostly because it is still in the experimental stages and mistakes have happened but the decision was yours alone to make. I read in my the medical reports last month that the medical community in the United States are also experimenting with these procedures, perhaps in a few years things will change for the better.”
His nurse brought the paperwork from the Lab. Doctor Phillips looked at them then told her, “Thank you, be sure to make an appointment for Mrs. Lance in three months.”
Doctor Phillips looked at me and said, “Jake are you having any problems with your sexual arrangements with Danielle I can help you with?”
I turned red and said, “She is horney most of the time otherwise I am satisfied with things.”
Doctor Phillips said, “If this is your only problem, I believe the two of you are probably well adjusted. Danielle do you have any further questions or problems with Jake in your bedroom?”
She said, “I am having a hard time weaning Jake, Do you think I should give him a bottle or just let him continue to suck on his thumb?”
Doctor Phillips broke out in a hardy laugh, stood up and shook my hand then told Danielle to go back to the Lab for her shots and medication. He gave her a hug and said, “I’ll see you in three months Danielle. I’ll inform Doctor Hansen of your decision.”
We stopped by the Lab and then headed for the car; I said, Sweetheart, I am hungry.”
After we ate, we headed back to the ranch. “Jake, if you are happy with our sex life the way it is so am I.”
“I was happy with it when we were up at Cow Camp, why change a good thing. I love you Danielle.”
Almost a year has passed since our big shuffle of the foremen; they were still all with us. For the life of me, I don’t know why, unless Bob and I have mellowed out some in our old age.”
Danielle and I were in town shopping at the drug store when Mrs. Jensen put her on the spot but as usual, Danielle was one jump ahead of things.
Mrs. Jensen said, “Danielle we haven’t seen much of you in the past few months is every thing alright? You haven’t been buying any sanitary napkins, would you be in the family way these days?”
Danielle started to cry as she said, “Things have changed for Jake and me.”
Mrs. Jensen came around the counter and put her arms around Danielle handing her a tissue and saying, “Would you like to talk about it dear?”
Danielle said, “About two and a half months ago I finished my period then four days later I started bleeding again. When I told Jake, he loaded me up and took me to the hospital in Deming. After the test, results were in and the bleeding quit. Dr. Philips took us into his office and explained I had internal female problems.”
He said, “We have the bleeding stopped for now but there is no guarantee it won’t start up again at any time. As far as you are from the hospital, if you start to hemorrhage, you could bleed to death before Jake could get you in here. It is a big gamble; I would suggest you have a hysterectomy for your own safety. The problem with this procedure is you will never have any children of your own.” Dr. Phillips said, “You and Jake need to discuss this and if you agree with me, we can take you right in and operate in the morning.”
Dr. Phillips left the room and we talked about the operation and decided it would be better for us to adopt than take a chance of me bleeding to death.
Mrs. Jensen said, “I am sorry for you my dear, I didn’t know about your condition until now.”
Danielle smiled at her and said, “We will have to live with our decision the rest of our lives, but it is better than bleeding to death before I could get to the hospital. We will see you next week Mrs. Jensen.”
I opened Danielle’s car door so she could get in, as I closed it and started around for my side, I could see Mrs. Jensen looking out of the store window shaking her head, as I closed my car door. I said, “Sweetheart, just what in the hell kind of bull shit were you handing Mrs. Jensen?”
Danielle said, “She won’t be so nosey from now on, now that she thinks I had a hysterectomy and can’t get pregnant, think of the good side Jake you won’t have to be embarrassed any more because, I won’t be buying more sanitary napkins.”
I said, “Look at all of the money we will save.”
Danielle replied, “Now isn’t that just like a man, all you can think about is your peter and your pocketbook.”
I started the car engine, as I backed out of the parking space and drove back to the Bell Brand. “Danielle; I’ll unload the car. You had better go inside and fix us some coffee after that whopper you told Mrs. Jensen.”
I had all of the bags in the house and sat down to drink my coffee when I heard a knock on the kitchen door. I got up and when I opened the door there stood Bob, “Come on in Bob and have some coffee with us.”
Bob sat down with me at the kitchen table; Danielle brought a cup and the coffee pot to the table as she sat his cup down in front of him she filled his cup and sat down at the table with us she looked at him and said, “Bob is there something wrong?”
Bob said, Yes Danielle, would you mind if Jake and I have a little private talk?”
“Jake, I am going to the bedroom and clean things up, call me when you are finished talking, the coffee pot is full.”
Danielle picked up her cup of coffee, Bob stood up as Danielle started to get up from her chair, when she started to walk out of the kitchen toward our bedroom with her coffee cup Bob said, “Thank you Danielle, it won’t take very long.”
Bob sat back down in his chair. He said, “Jake we have a problem with one of the men.”
“Is it something you can’t handle?”
“Jake, I don’t like accusing someone of doing wrong, especially when I don’t have any first hand knowledge about it.
“Tell me about it, and then we can sort things out and try to figure out a solution.”
Bob said, “Sally Johnson came over to our house today to visit with Martha; she started to cry as she told Martha she saw a man’s face peeking in her bedroom window last night as she was undressing for bed. Jim is up at Cow Camp for the next two weeks and Sally is afraid to tell Jim when he comes home about what happened for fear Jim might try to kill him.”
“Did Sally recognize the man looking in her window?”
“She thinks it was Brad Sadler.”
“Does Sally think he knows she saw him?
“Sally didn’t think so but she is afraid he will try to do it again tonight and she is scared.”
“Do you think we could catch him in the act tonight?
Bob said, “Jim is a good friend to both of us, I would sure like to give it a try. Do you think we could talk Sally into helping us out if we sent Danielle and Martha to stay with her?”
“Let’s ask Danielle what she thinks then she can call Martha and have her come over here, perhaps they can talk to Sally and we can put a plan into operation.”
“Call Danielle and see what she thinks.”
I called Danielle, when she came into the kitchen, and sat down, we told her about our plan. She was in agreement with us and said she would call Martha and have her come over and discuss the problem with us over a cup of coffee. When Martha came in, we discussed our plan. We decided to have Martha call Sally and see if she would go along with us tonight if Martha and Danielle came over to stay with her.
While Martha was talking to Sally Bob said, “Brad won’t be back until supper. I sent him and two other men over to the Sorensen Ranch to help mend some fences.”
Martha said, “Sally will do it if we are there to protect her.”
Martha and Danielle walked over to be with Sally, they were to stay out of sight in the adjoining room while Sally set him up. Bob and I stayed out of sight in Sally’s back yard and waited for Brad to show up. Bob had his camera with him to take a picture if possible for proof. Bob was sitting behind a large bush on the opposite side of the bedroom window from me. I took my place behind some shrubbery along the back fence near the gate with my flashlight in hand.
About forty-five minutes later we saw a shadow appear at the back gate and slowly crept over to stand beside the house then made its way to Sally’s bedroom window. Around nine o’clock Sally turned out the front room and kitchen lights, Sally was alone in her bedroom, she picked up her nightgown and went into the bathroom to change her clothes.
We saw the shadow move in front of the bedroom window and crouched down as Sally came back into her bedroom turning out the bathroom light. Sally slowly walked across the bedroom in her thin nightgown, sat down in front of her vanity mirror, and started to comb her hair.
