Introduction: Serial killer

I looked at Robert as I drove, “so why send for us? They have an entire task force.”

He snorted as he scratched under Pretty Boy’s chin, “because they have thirty four bodies now and no leads. After our last case the task force commander wanted us to come take a fresh look.”

I sighed, “that would be Inspector Commander Dillon.”

He nodded, “he is hard and by the book.”

I shook my head, “and doesn’t like me.”

He chuckled, “you had a run in?”

I nodded, “when I was in uniform. I cited him at a crime scene.”

Robert laughed, “for?”

I glanced at him, “he parked at the scene inside the laser grid and destroyed footprints.”

He shook his head and pointed ahead, “that looks like the crime scene.”

I slowed and parked behind several other vehicles and got out to look around. I followed Robert and caught Pretty Boy. I ignored the looks I got as we walked down the slope to the shallow grave. Six inspectors turned as we stopped and I squatted down, “he has been in the ground to long to do a resonance spell.”

One of the inspectors snorted, “lazy mage.”

I glanced at him, “only a fool or moron would think a mage was lazy.”

His face redden as the other inspectors shifted and I turned to the lab mage glaring at them, “hey Dexter. How is your wife?”

He smiled, “expecting me back so we can go on our vacation.”

I grinned and looked at the grave and then around the edge, “did you try a reverse seer spell on the impressions?”

Dexter moved closer, “they want to do molds and said to wait.”

I stood, “move back.”

Another inspector walked up, “that would be my call inspector.”

I looked at Roger, “lets go. You can tell the peace commissioner we weren’t needed.”

He turned as inspector commander Dillon reddened, “you made your point inspector.”

I looked at him, “we were asked to come. We didn’t ask you to have us here.”

I gestured and murmured and suddenly shut my mouth, “move back quickly.”

The ground glowed and a light mist was starting to rise as I looked at the inspectors still standing there, “move before you die.”

That had them moving as I gestured to Dexter, “someone left a trap.”

He nodded and moved around and faced me, “ethereal?”

I nodded, “I’ll do the elements.”

He started chanting as I began to murmur and draw runes in the air. The mist caught fire and shifted into a circle before changing to a pentagram. I gestured and the fire froze before changing to a clear mist. Dexter pulled out a bottle and gestured and the mist flowed into the bottle. I sighed as he put a stopper in the bottle and looked at the grave and body.

I started the other spell again as the inspectors started moving back. This time vague images appeared to come and go from the grave and Dexter chanted and they appeared together and merged before freezing. I glanced at Robert, “photo?”

He was already taking a picture and then the image faded. I relaxed as Dexter walked around, “I’m glad you were here.”

I nodded, “give my aunt a kiss.”

He grinned as he started collecting his kit and I turned to head towards the lake, “Robert?”

The others followed and I stopped to look at the shore, “he came by boat.”

Inspector commander Dillon cleared his throat, “and is a mage.”

I looked at him and shook my head slightly, “I doubt it but it is possible. The trap that was left could have originated from church charms.”

I looked at the water and touched Pretty Boy. He flew off me as I walked into the water and chanted and a minute later the water seemed to shift and shimmer, “what do you seek?”

I ignored the men on the shore, “the one that came and went from this spot.”

“It was a human man. He came from the far side.”

I nodded, “thank you.”

The water calmed and I turned to walk out, “not a mage but someone with knowledge of magic.”

They nodded and I gestured to dry my shoes before starting back towards our car, “we need to see the files on the other victims.”

Robert turned to walk beside me, “the comp search didn’t get any hits on the image.”

The others fell in to follow as I nodded, “it was old but worth a try.”

I looked at the commander, “you will look for a boat rental on the other side of the lake?”

He nodded and reached out to catch my sleeve. I stopped and he took a breath, “I want to apologize. I was wrong when you gave me the cite. You know what you are doing and have a different look on things.”

I nodded and looked at Roger, “we will go through the files and see if we can find anything.”

I glanced at Roger at his desk across from me, “I have looked at all the scenes. This was the first time a mage trap was used.”

He sat back, “they were all accessed by water.”

I nodded, “to keep a mage from tracking him? Want to bet he steals the boats?”

Roger turned and did a search before nodding as he displayed a holograph map of the stolen boats. I followed it with my eyes before looking at him, “there is a pattern.”

He shifted, “none of the burial sites follow a pattern.”

I touched a spot in the holograph, “want to bet he steals the next boat from here?”

He stood up, “what is the cycle he has been using?”

I glanced at my notes, “it is down to two weeks.”

I stood, “and the last person was killed two weeks ago.”

Roger pulled his comm and called inspector commander Dillon. The marina we stopped at was small with only three isolated docks. Roger headed towards the office as I watched the water and the boats. Dillon and three other inspectors arrived and got out as Roger returned. He smiled, “all the boats are accounted for. The office closes in a couple of hours.”

Dillon cleared his throat, “you said there was a pattern?”

Roger nodded to me, “we saw that he always came by boat and made a check for stolen boats. Around the time they were killed, a boat was stolen from a different spot in a pattern.”

The commander smiled and looked around, “and you think he will come here to steal his next one.”

I nodded, “his cycle is coming closer together but he hasn’t taken one from here yet. I think it is worth staking out even if it takes a few days.”

He looked at the other men, “I agree.”

I gestured and he walked to the side with me and I glanced at him, “I think he knows I am on the case.”

He snorted and I cleared my throat, “he never left a mage trap before.”

He looked at me and frowned, “only the task force knew I was going to ask...”

I waited and he growled, “he is inside.”

I shrugged, “or somehow managed to plant bugs.”

He blinked and nodded, “I think we are keeping this secret. You and your partner can have the first eight hours and myself and inspector Malone will relieve you.”

It was several hours later, Roger was sitting on the other side of the empty lot in the small bait shack. I was sitting almost in a bush next to the water and hidden by an illusion. It was getting close to midnight when suddenly the night was shattered by weapons fire. I came to my feet as the bait shack was riddled with bullets.

Two men had come out of the dark and were firing automatic weapons. I murmured and gestured and two huge arms exploded out of the water. The hands grabbed the two men who suddenly screamed. They were yanked back and down into the water that exploded in steam. They were brought towards me as they straggled in the water.

I started to take a step and another man appear by me holding a large bore shotgun and looking around. I gestured and another arm and hand of water grabbed him. He screamed as he was suddenly thrown into the water. I was tempted to let them drown but lifted them out of the water. Watery hands and arms held them as I murmured a spell.

A huge globe of light exploded above the parking area, “Pretty boy!”

The door of the bait shack was kicked open and Robert stalked out behind the gargoyle. I sighed and turned my attention to the three men shaking in the grip of watery hands. My partner crossed to me and glared at the men, “to bad they got off easy.”

I smiled, “someone put protections on them. They will probably have at least second degree burns on them.”

He grinned, “I’m sure I will feel bad for them... just not today.”

I laughed as Pretty Boy landed on my shoulder, “what happened in the shack?”

Robert snorted, “Pretty Boy knocked my ass off the chair and tried to cover me on the floor.”

I grinned, “he wants to keep getting the treats you sneak him.”

He grinned as he pulled out his comm, “this means the killer knew we were here. Want to bet they were hired?”

I shook my head as he called for back up. I made a pentagram while we waited and made another for Robert to stand in. I gestured to one man and murmured and he jerked and screamed but the water contained the trap. An image appeared between him and us and I glanced at Robert as he took a picture.

I repeated it with the other two men but the image of the man was the same. Robert grinned as peace officer vehicles began arriving. I murmured and chanted and used flowing water to strip the traps off the men before dropping them on the ground. We moved to put restraints on them and let the uniformed officers take them away.

Inspector commander Dillon arrived and crossed to us as we looked over the weapons that had been used. I had check them for traps and nodded to Robert after putting them in a pentagram. I murmured a spell and first the image of each man appeared to one side of the weapons.

They faded and were replaced by the same image from before. Inspector commander Dillon hissed, “I saw him in the squad room.”

I looked at him, “so how did he find out we were here?”

He looked at me before growling, “can you check for listening devises?”

I nodded and chanted the spell and he jerked before pulling his comm as it vibrated and glowed. He growled, “that son of...”

He looked at me and held out his hand, “let me borrow yours to have everyone come out.”

I glanced at Robert before handing my comm over, “we are getting off track.”

Dillon looked at me as I murmured and created an image of the other docks nearby. I pointed to one and Robert nodded, “we could go check it out while everyone is looking around here.”

Dillon glanced at the image and gestured and I turned to walk away with Robert towards my vehicle. The dock we went to wasn’t far but it was dark and very isolated. I glanced at the dark vehicle sitting behind some bushes and pointed it out. He walked towards it as I continued to the dock.

I noticed one boat already missing and knelt before chanting beside the empty boat slip. I watched the ghostly image of the boat moving away from the dock and continued to murmur another spell. The image of the lake appeared in front of my eyes as I turned and started walking, “Robert!”

I opened my vehicle and got in as Robert trotted to me. Pretty Boy was clinging to his shoulder as he jumped in. I lifted and spun the vehicle before he even closed the door. I accelerated out and over the lake and followed the image. Robert pointed to the distant shore where the boat was pulled up.

I dropped quickly and both Robert and I opened the door and jumped out. A man started running from a half dug hole with a body beside it. We started after him and I chanted and threw a spell as he suddenly turned with a gun. The bright bloom of the muzzle flash lit the night as we dove to each side.

He turned to run and stumbled before starting to scream as he fell. I came to my feet and started moving forward with my weapon out. Robert was beside me with his weapon out too and I tossed a light spell up. I grinned as Robert chuckled and shook his head. Pretty Boy was on the man and kept bitting him over and over.

I gestured, “Pretty boy.”

The gargoyle looked at me and bit him again before leaping into the air. Robert knelt and ignored the spasming as he put restraints on the man. It was awhile before we could stand him up and by then inspector commander Dillon and the other inspectors had arrived. Robert shoved the man into the arms of the other inspectors as I walked to the body.

I knelt and reached out and rolled her onto her back. I frowned and knelt to put my ear against her chest before moving quickly, “Get an ambulance!”

I swiftly checked her as I kept pressure on the wound in her chest. I began chanting and shook my head as Robert knelt on her other side, “she is bleeding out internally.”

I whispered and chanted again and her body lifted off the ground and began glowing. I kept my hand on her as I continued to enchant her. Above her a ghostly image appeared and I nodded when I saw the bleeding. I changed to murmuring a spell and the bleeding stopped.

I looked at Robert as he held his arms under her, “she is going to need a doctor to drain the blood in the chest but she is stable.”

He nodded as she settled into his arms and two of the other inspectors came to help. They moved her to the lake and the waiting vehicles. The woman survived and the killer received a death sentence. Not only had he placed surveillance vids in the squad rooms, he had managed to place listening devices in each inspectors comm.

He managed it because he had been a civilian data tech for the peace force. The men that had attacked us had been paid and received twenty years on a prison planet.
