I was watching the two guards patrolling the distant estate when my comm went off. I touched the ear bud, “Phoenix.” “Are you watching Princess Jasmine?” I smiled, “no.” The general sighed, “than we have a problem.” I turned to look into the room, “David?” He turned away from his comp screens, “yeah?” I pulled the comm out and put it on speaker, “have your people been able to ID anyone?” “No and that is why I called. Whoever is watching is very good and seems to pay a lot of attention to the guards as well.” David cleared his throat, “do the guard have those new Ident chips implanted?” There was a pause before the general answered, “yes.” I smiled because David had only just found the hidden flaw, “have all Ident chips removed immediately.” “You know they were commissioned and ordered implanted by the full council.” David snorted, “the traitors designed them so they could be tracked. If your men have them implanted and someone has the sat freq they know where each man is.” The general cursed, “thanks, I’ll tell the old man and begin removing them. Unless what you are doing is vital I would like you to check out the princess’s security and find our stalker.” He disconnected and David turned back to his comps, “I’ll start the vid and comp search around the...” I opened an encrypted comm, “if you are done having tea with the emperor we have something else to do.” Takara chuckled, “he is a sweet old man.” I smiled and changed the comm freq, “Paul we need transportation to Tarot.” Tarot was a city seven thousand kilometers away, “I have just the thing.” I turned and crossed to knock on the bedroom door, “pack it up.” Edward came out a few moments later, “what’s up?” I was heading to the other bedroom, “someone is stalking princess Jasmine.” An hour later we were in a fast flyer. I sat in back on the comm as Edward and David talked about some remote weapon system and Takara played solitaire. I glanced at David, “I have the planet look down sats authorized for our use under your name. Look for any thermal signatures that match.” He nodded and turned to open a large case and I gestured to Edward. He moved to sit across from me and I leaned back, “if someone is going to try something it might be long distance. Anything you can think of to confuse them?” He grinned, “everyone is tech orientated. Radar or sonar or even enhanced vison aids. I could make a electronic fogger her guards could carry.” I nodded, “what about holo generators?” He blinked, “what... oh, programed so she looks like someone else.” I nodded again and he gestured to David, “that would be something David could do.” I gestured, “check her schedule and start a watch.” I turned, “Takara?” She collected her cards, “look for a way in?” I snorted, “if someone has been watching they may already have that. You are going in as her companion. You know how someone can get close, find the blind spots and tell the detail commander when you do.” She grinned, “sounds fun.” I sat back, “I am going to check out known... anti loyalists.” As soon as we landed I helped move our bags before slipping out with Paul. The large apartment building had a few men standing around as if they were just lounging but I knew better. I drove past and parked a couple of blocks away. I glanced at Paul before I got out, “the princess’s team uses modified Galaxies. Look them over for modifications or traps.” He nodded and when I got out he took my place and left. I turned and walked back the way we had come. I turned in at the building entrance and walked towards the doors. Two men shifted and stepped in front of me and I snapped a kick into one’s groin and punched the other in the throat, “get the fuck out of my way.” I walked past them as they went down and the others started to move towards me. I turned at the door, “the next one to try something will die.” I opened the door and walked in and headed straight back. The person I wanted to talk to was on the fourth floor. I ignored the stairs and the lifts as I went all the way to the other end of the building. I kicked the maintenance door open and walked in. I ignored everything on the shelves as I walked to the back and opened the access panel. I stepped in and pulled it closed before I started climbing the ladder. I could hear people through the vents as I climbed to the fourth floor. I reached over and opened another panel before silently crawling out. I pulled my weapon as I stood in the closet and used my foot to close the panel. I opened the closet door and heard people talking. I walked out of the bedroom and down the hall to the living area. I glanced to the right and into the entrance hall before stepping out and lifting the weapon, “move and you die.” The three men standing by the door spun with wide shocked eyes. They dropped the assault rifles they were carrying and one cleared his throat, “this is illegal.” I walked to him and put the barrel between his eyes, “so is treason.” He was shaking, “we haven’t done anything.” I smiled, “yet.” I took a step back, “who is watching princess Jasmine?” He blinked, “I don’t know.” I was watching him and the other two and nodded, “very well. If I hear one more whisper about you or your faction of traitors I will return and no one will have to worry ever again.” I looked at one of the other men, “pick up the rifles by the muzzle and smash them.” His face reddened, “they are private property...” I shot him between the eyes, “and illegal to posses.” I looked at the other man, “by the barrel and smash them.” He did what I told him and I looked at Neilson, “next time I visit and find a weapon you will die.” I gestured them away and into the room before opening the door and stepping out. I moved quickly to the nearest set of stairs and started down. Two men appeared and lifted rifles, I didn’t even pause as I shot both in the head before they could fire. I stepped over their bodies and walked down the hall and out. The four men standing around shifted and I shook my weapon, “inside. Next time I will kill you for being a traitor.” I watched them go in before I walked away. I was thinking and if they didn’t know than it wasn’t one of the factions. When I walked into our rooms David was intently watching a sat vid. I stood behind him for a minute and he finally sat back before glancing over his shoulder. He grinned, “I didn’t hear you.” I nodded to the monitors and he turned, “there are three watchers. They are wearing thermal blockers so I can’t get a signature lock.” I shifted around to look him, “is this real time?” He nodded, “the princess is attending a meeting.” I headed for the door as I pulled my comm, “let me know if they move.” I made a couple of calls to her security detail as I used one of our vehicles. I stopped a block from the outer perimeter of the princess’s guards. I walked into a building and started up the stairs as I linked my comm to David’s, “is this one still here?” “Yes.” When I stepped out onto the roof I moved silently as I began to stalk the man. I made another call when I had him in sight and disconnected when it was answered. I knew two teams were moving in on the two other watchers and started forward. The man spun just as I reached him and tried to pull a weapon. I placed the barrel of mine between his eyes, “go ahead.” He froze and licked his lips, “I’m not...” I snapped a kick into his far leg and pulled a stun wand as he fell. I hit him with the wand and held it as he spasmed. I let him go and searched him and took two weapons. I restrained him and sat him up as I moved to the roof wall and came back with the stubby barreled rifle. I squatted, “this is a death sentence.” He glared, “you have to prove...” I slapped him, “I don’t have to prove anything. You are not leaving this roof alive.” He looked around as if for a way out before swallowing, “I’ll talk.” I snorted, “it better be real good if you are going to save your own life.” He looked at me, “we were paid by Consort Melborne.” I looked at him carefully, “what proof?” He shifted, “my comp. I have the vid records...” I placed my weapon against his head as I pulled his comp and stepped back to touch my comp to his, “David?” “Accessing now.” I kept watching the man, “why would the consort want Jasmine dead?” He snorted, “how would I know?” “Got it and... crap... okay the vid is authentic and he had three. Checking to verify Melborne’s... It was him and he paid them to kill her and the prince.” I growled, “which prince?” “Sorry. Prince George. From what I found in the comp there were six of them.” I looked at the man, “where are the other three men?” He shrugged, “I have no idea.” I lifted my weapon, “wrong answer.” He jerked, “Wait!” He licked his lips, “they are inside.” I stepped back and pulled my comm to call Takara, “you have three hitters inside the perimeter and inside the building.” She growled, “the detail commander doesn’t want to take her out.” I shot the man between the eyes, “did they get the other two?” “Yeah but he has...” I heard weapons firing and shouting and started running for the roof door, “David!” “I have them on the building security vids. Takara has two men that took down the security team at the door pinned.” I snarled as I ran down the stairs, “where is the princess?” “Takara has her on the floor behind a cabinet she knocked over.” I hit the door and it burst open as I ran out and headed down the street, “get Edward and Paul.” The firing stopped but I continued to run and Takara came on, “well that was fun. Thanks Edward.” I growled, “someone talk to me!” “Edward was there and killed the two men.” I slowed, “that leaves one more still in there.” I had pulled my ID as I approached the guards that had made a barricade. I held it up, “get her out...” “No.” I started walking again as the guards let me pass, “Paul?” He growled, “the vehicles have been tampered with.” I stopped at the front doors where a dozen guards were, “get me the detail commander now.” I looked around, “what about her back up?” “I checked it first and someone made adjustments to disable it.” “David. You have the three vids. Use the building security vids to identify the last man.” I turned as a captain stepped, “you have no...” I stepped towards him, “I can have you relieved right here and now. You have a hitter inside the building.” He shook his head, “we had two and...” I growled as I leaned closer, “listen close captain. You have one more hitter in the damn building. Seal it and start searching every room, closet and bathroom. You will call General Edwards and get a company here with vehicles ASAP.” I pushed past him and strode into the building as he started yelling orders. I followed David’s directions to the princess and Edward and wasn’t surprised to find him sitting across from her talking about dress styles. Takara shook her head as I walked in, “they came out of a closet.” I looked at the princess and nodded, “if you wanted to sneak out now, how would you do it?” She blinked and spun before leaving. I put my weapon away and called the general. I continued to turn and scan the room until he answered, “damn it Sergeant maj... Phoenix. You are not supposed to interfere...” I cleared my throat, “my orders are from the emperor and are very clear. I don’t know if this captain is incompetent or just slow. In any case the princess was a target and there were six men paid to kill her.” He sighed, “do you know who?” I growled, “that I will have to talk to the emperor about. Prince George is also in danger since he too was a target.” The general growled, “I will triple his guards.” I nodded, “I need access to the sats over him for my team.” “give me a few minutes and you can have access to all the sats.” Takara walked into the room and smiled, “the last rat is dead.” I blinked, “we are returning with the princess general.” I disconnected, “Paul get us transport. Edward and Takara stay with the princess. David, as soon as you can you need to multi task. Start reviewing the sats above the prince.” I headed for the door and moved the guards in my way, “where is your captain and first sergeant?” An hour and we were boarding our flyer with the princes and several of her guards. I glanced at David as I nodded for Paul to leave, “the watchers still there?” He nodded, “I have found another six so that makes nine. I relayed their location to the prince’s security commander.” As the flyer began moving I called the general, “your people have the other watchers. You need to take them out and I need to speak with the Emperor when we get there.” He sighed, “he knows and is expecting you.” I disconnected and bent to whisper in David’s ear, “I need consort Melborne’s location without anyone knowing and the three vids downloaded to my comp.” He looked at me, “I heard the watcher.” I shook my head, “sniper David, he had a rifle.” He blinked before growling as he nodded, “think it is a power play?” I glanced at the princess at the back of the flyer with Takara and Edward, “you also need to start watching the sats over the emperor’s estate. We didn’t see anything before but Prince Joseph is with him now.” David nodded and bent to start looking at the three comp screens in his lap. When we landed the princess’s detail led her off and a whole company took her away to the emperor’s estate. I looked at my people, “Paul I need you to do an in depth inspection of prince George’s vehicles.” He nodded and I glanced at Takara, “lock down the ways into the emperor’s estate.” She grinned, “okay.” I looked at Edward, “I need something special. Something that will kill but seem like a natural death.” He frowned but nodded, “you will need to get close.” I nodded and looked at David, “you can tell them but no one else, it stays with us. Watch around the estate using the sats.” I looked at them, “we will use the same townhouse as before. Meet me there when you can.” I walked out of the flyer and headed into the port. I checked one of our vehicles we had left before driving away. I parked outside the estate and walked from there. I touched the scan plate at the main entrance gate and it turned green. Several guards looked at me as I walked through and headed towards the distant manor. When I walked into the large study the emperor was with general Edwards. I crossed to the desk and went around to bend over next to his ear, “Consort Melborne hired men to kill your son and his wife.” He jerked and looked at me before waving the general back, “leave us.” The general looked at me before nodding and walking out. I pulled my comp and replayed the vid of the sniper. I looked at the emperor, “we have more with him paying them.” He glanced at me, “show me.” David had put them in order and I played them one at a time as the emperor’s mouth thinned. He looked at me, “remove him but do it quietly.” I straightened and bowed before walking out. I went to the townhouse and walked in to see David with Edward looking over his shoulder at several monitor screens. He straightened and crossed the room and pulled a small, thin wand, “you have to be within three meters. Just point at his heart and press the button.” I accepted it and glanced at David, “this part I don’t like.” I turned and walked out after checking my comp to see if I had the location where the consort was. He was in a luncheon so I waited in a seat beside the door he would have to pass. I held the wand in my sleeve and waited. When his security team came out they were alert as they glanced around but I was looking the other way. As the consort started past I shifted the wand and touched the firing stud. He stumbled in the door a few moments later and collapsed when he stepped outside. His security scooped him up and rushed him away, I stood and walked away. He died on the way to the hospital while his team worked to revive him. The men he had hired were taken by security and we sealed the holes they had found. |
