Introduction: Faceless man

I looked like I was still in my teens and would for several decades. I straightened my suit before walking into the huge manor. My eyes flicked over everything as I walked and nodded to the uniformed peace officer. I stepped into the elegant study and looked at the large night vista out the window. I turned towards the desk and the older man standing beside it.

He cleared his throat, “this is a crime scene.”

I smiled as I started for the desk, “I have been assigned as your new partner.”

He growled, “great.”

I stopped beside him and looked at the body folded under the desk, “was there surveillance?”

He snorted, “I wish. I called in for a mage.”

I nodded as I started around him, “you can cancel that call.”

I squatted beside the naked body of the woman and began to murmur and chant. There was a shimmer before the image of the woman appeared beside the desk. A man was with her and I gestured, “could you take a photo of him?”

He hissed, “done.”

I gestured and we watched as they struggled before she was killed and then shoved under the desk. I let it go before standing, “there was something wrong with the man.”

My partner looked at me carefully, “a mage.”

I lifted an eyebrow, “I have trained hard to be a peace officer and an inspector.”

He shrugged, “you’re still a mage.”

I sighed, “I was born a mage.”

He smiled, “well Cherry, I’m Hunter.”

He started for the door and I followed, “Inspector Robert Hunter.”

He didn’t reply as we left and I moved up beside him, “I am Simon Glimmer.”

I watched as he used a small comp screen before grunting, “the man was Albert Nelson and he has been dead for a month.”

I touched his arm and looked around, ignoring the peace officer. I whispered a charm and a tiny speck glowed in front of us, “this will show us where the woman and man where before.”

I followed as it headed towards the stairs, “what did the owners say?”

Robert snorted, “their lawyer claimed they didn’t know her.”

I stopped at an open door into a bedroom suite. I glanced at him as he stepped in and looked at the clothing strewn across the room. I followed and gestured, “she came from the bathroom.”

He nodded and gestured to a side table, “bottles of perfume. Want to bet we find her clothes in the closet?”

I shook my head, “look in the night stand.”

He walked to one and pulled it out, “a purse.”

He opened it, “it was hers.”

I turned, “time to speak to the owners again.”

Robert sighed, “the rich never talk, they let their lawyer do all the talking.”

I whistled as I walked out and a moment later there was a startled yell from the peace officer below. The small leathery hide of the gargoyle flew up the stairs. The back looked like a cat with a long tail, the front shoulders were like a monkey with arms and hands. He had large bat like wings and the head was like a demon’s.

I caught him and moved him to my shoulder, “Robert this is Pretty Boy. He has been in my family through four generations.”

The inspector shook his head, “his familiar, great.”

I smiled, “think of him as a guard dog only a lot more useful.”

We walked into the huge formal front room and two men and a woman turned to look at us. One stepped forward, “Officers my clients...”

I gestured and he was slammed against the far wall with his mouth frozen closed. The couple’s eyes went wide as we approached and I pointed at the man, “you will be arrested for conspiring after the fact in the death of your guest.”

Robert smiled, “and obstruction of a criminal investigation.”

I looked at the woman, “lie to us again.”

She swallowed, “Diedre was my lover.”

I nodded as Robert began questioning them again. When we were done I glanced at the lawyer and freed him, “interfere again and you will go to prison.”

He straightened, “I will have your badge.”

I smiled, “my name is Simon Glimmer, Mage Simon Glimmer. Make sure you inform the judge or official you knowingly conspired with your clients to conceal facts and evidence in a murder.”

His mouth opened and I looked at Robert, “we will be informing the legal ethics board of your actions.”

His face paled as we walked out. I glanced at the medical examiner when she walked in, “hello Morticia.”

She looked at me before smiling, “Simon? I was just speaking with your mother the other day.”

I ignored Robert’s look, “how is she?”

Morticia grinned, “wicked. She beat everyone in the game and was very smug doing it.”

I laughed, “sounds like mom.”

She waved as she headed towards the study, “I’ll send you the report when I finish inspector Hunter.”

He looked after her and then looked at me as we left, “so Cherry what next?”

I sighed as I looked around, “I would like to look at what we have in the death of Albert Nelson.”

Robert nodded, “yeah.”

I looked at him, “it wasn’t an illusion or magical alteration. I think he was wearing a skin mask.”

I headed to my vehicle, “need a ride?”

He nodded and followed, “we might get a match using the reticle measurements.”

I climbed in and waited for Robert to close his door before lifting and turning the car. I watched the traffic, “how did he get into the house? He caught her on the second floor and didn’t go anywhere else so he was looking for her.”

I had worked my first three years across the huge city in uniform so I knew what they were doing at the manor now. They were making careful scans at every door and window into the manor as well as collecting prints and molds. We spent the next twelve hours reviewing the death of Albert Nelson. The point of entry for the manor had been a back door where someone had bypassed the lock to get in.

A check showed that was how someone had entered Albert Nelson’s home. He had drown in a tub under suspicious circumstances. Robert sat on the edge of my desk and slid a data chip across, “he was Diedre Adams legal advisor. She filed for sole custody of a child in an artificial womb. The listed father was Mr Daniels.”

I leaned back, “and Mrs Daniels has just made an announcement that they are expecting a child.”

He snorted, “so Diedre was a surrogate or his lover and not hers.”

I nodded, “but what gets me is Nelson and the method of death.”

He looked at me and I smiled, “we have two other similar deaths. You know if someone is killed in running water there isn’t a resonance. I did a little checking and they each had cases pending or filed against clients of the Daniels lawyer Denlinger.”

Robert stood, “he tried to file a case of abuse against you.”

I shrugged, “not many judges would listen and we did file that notice.”

He grinned, “and the city legal ethics board has demanded he attend a censor review board.”

I stood, “now he is an official suspect in our investigation.”

Robert grinned as we started for the door, “why don’t we go have a talk with lawyer Denlinger?”

We walked into the fancy office for Denlinger and a pretty receptionist smiled politely, “how can I help you?”

Robert displayed his badge, “we are here to speak with Mr Denlinger. He is a suspect in four murders and we need answers.”

She blinked and looked at the thick oak door beside her desk. I gestured to Pretty Boy and started for the door and shoved it open as I walked in. Robert was behind me and I spun as the lawyer lunged out from the coat rack. He put a pistol to Robert’s head, “stay back and don’t try any magic!”

I had pulled my weapon and aimed but smiled as my partner growl, “shoot the asshole.”

I shook my head as I lowered my weapon, “Pretty Boy?”

The lawyer screamed and flailed around as the gargoyle clung to his neck and shoulder before bitting. Denlinger’s scream went up a few notches as he began to spasm and jerk. Roger spun and pulled his weapon and growled, “what the hell?”

I grinned, “think of a very over powered stun wand and then imagine it ten times stronger.”

Pretty Boy leaped as he stopped biting and the lawyer fell. He was still jerking and spasming on the floor as we watched him. Roger grinned, “I bet that hurts.”

I nodded and used a foot to nudge him, “I think Pretty Boy likes you.”

I knelt and rolled the twitching and shaking lawyer over before binding him. I gestured to the pistol on the floor, “you might want to get that with evidence tongs and call the scene investigation unit. They can process the office to find out why he attacked us.”

He grinned, “and any evidence they find we can use to break our case.”

We had a uniform take Denlinger in while we waited for the scene investigators and called a judge for a search authorization. When the safe was found the technicians growled and said we would need a lock specialist. I sighed as Robert grinned and moved to the safe. I touched it and began murmured a spell that brought up the resonance.

I watched as the image of Denlinger put the combination in. I nodded before dismissing it and entering the combination. Inside was files and papers as well as bundles of credit notes, there was also small vid tapes. When the techs finished we returned to the office and started watching the tapes. From the first one we knew we had him and not just him but his clients.

Roger ordered all his assets seized after getting a reasonable cause order from a judge. While he had the four clients arrested and brought in I went to speak to Denlinger. I walked into the interrogation room and crossed to sit on the other chair across from the lawyer, “we have you for criminal assault of a peace officer.”

He seemed calm, “you entered my office without a warrant.”

I smiled, “we entered your office to question you about four murders. If you did not wish to speak with us you could have refused. Since you assaulted my partner without provocation we were granted a search authorization for your office, we found the safe.”

He stiffened, “It has client information...”

I shook my head, “we have already established you are part of a criminal enterprise. All your assets have been seized. That is the least of your problems, we have the vid tapes. For contracting the deaths of four people any sentence will automatically be death.”

His face paled and I leaned on the table, “we want the killer.”

He smiled, “for consideration...”

I stood and leaned over the table, “when you are convicted I will request and get authorization to compel you.”

He paled, “fine. I don’t have a name.”

He told me everything, names, dates, amounts and accounts. I waited for the judge to read the charges to the four clients and Denlinger before Roger and I left. We headed across town to a large apartment complex. I walked in and looked at the mail boxes before glancing at my partner. I touched the box and whispered the spell to watch the resonance.

The mail man came and went and then other people and the lawyer and then after awhile the mailman again. I watched and he never opened the box either time. I gestured and it stopped before I looked at Robert, “we are going to need a judge to get access to the box.”

He snorted and I glanced around, “and to search the apartment on the other side of this wall.”

He looked at me and then at the boxes before grinning, “I didn’t think of that.”

He made the call and grinned before nodding to me, “open it.”

I touched the box and murmured and it popped open. I looked inside, “empty.”

He grinned and I touched one side as I murmured the spell and we watched the resonance inside the box. Denlinger’s hand appeared and the box darkened and the back of the box opened. I straightened as the back was closed and we looked down the hall. A man stepped out of the apartment and headed the other way. I turned and started after him, “excuse me.”

He acted like he didn’t hear and I started walking faster, “Peace officers, HALT!”

He spun and a weapon came up like it was in slow motion. I gestured as I lunged to the side and the weapon fired. I was pulling my weapon as the bullet passed me in slow motion and Pretty Boy pounced. The man screamed and kept it up as I twisted to check Roger. He was on the opposite side of the hall with his weapon out.

He straightened and started towards the man, “we should restrain the suspect.”

I started towards the man on the floor still spasming and jerking while he screamed. Roger grinned as he caught up and put his hand on my shoulder, “we can take our time. He did try to kill us so we should be cautious.”

I grinned as I gestured to Pretty Boy, “I think you are coming to like my family guardian.”

Four murders solved on my first case as an inspector was a good start.
