Many people knowledged my grandfather as we rode through the town. No one said or did anything as Georgia trotted along beside Emily’s horse. The whole isle felt different as if it were alive. We stopped for the night in a group of tall trees and Farrell slipped out to hunt. I fed Crystal and Lachlan before I helped make camp and brought in wood. Afterwards Wynn was playing some stalking game with Georgia and Emily. I watched as both the eagles looked at him enviously. I smiled and lifted Lachlan and turned, “spread your wings and lean into the wind. Tilt your wings back and reach out with your feet when you reach the ground.” I waited before I gave him a toss. He squawked and flapped before spreading his wings and gliding a dozen feet. He landed awkwardly and flapped several time but I could feel how excited he was. I went to pick him up and carry him back to the limb they were using and lifted Crystal down. She was eager to try and spread her wings before I gave her a toss. I went back and forth as I tossed them a dozen times before stopping. Farrell brought in several fat rabbits and grinned, “I killed them with my sling and they didn’t even run.” It was several days before we rode around a lake and into a city like one the elves would build. There were huge trees with houses build around and up into the branches above. The house we rode to was massive, it was between three huge trees and spiraled up all three and spread out as it went. My grandfather slid out of his saddle as a dozen lads ran out, “take the horses to Daniel and have our things brought to the royal tower.” I slipped off Kern and lifted Lachlan to my shoulder before turning to Crystal as Farrell set Wynn down. The boys looked at me and them curiously as I held Crystal on my wrist and started for the wide front doors my grandfather had gone through. Wynn trotted to keep up and all three of them kept looking around. A tall, older man bowed to me and Farrell, “if you will follow?” I nodded and he turned to walk to the right and down a hall past the first huge tree and the staircase up. We walked past a large dinning hall and what looked like a huge study before taking a winding staircase up another huge tree. We went past the first landing and then the second and he paused before looking at me and continuing up. On the third he walked across to a set of doors and opened one. I walked in as he held the door and looked around before walking to a large window. It had what looked like a falcon or hawk stands in front of it. I let Crystal step off and then lifted Lachlan down and put him on the other stand. I turned and the old man smiled, “this was your father’s suite. The stands were for his and your mother’s hawks.” I looked around and he looked at Farrell, “I am at a loss as to where...” I cleared my throat, “Farrell is my friend.” He smiled, “perhaps he might use your guest room?” I looked around again and he pointed to one of two door, “the master bedroom.” He pointed the other way at another door, “the guest room.” I smiled, “thanks.” He bowed, “if you need anything.” I looked at him, “your name?” He reddened, “My pardon. I am Christopher.” I watched him leave before looking at Farrell, “we need to watch our backs here. It looks peaceful but...” He nodded, “someone wants you dead.” I nodded and bent to pick up Wynn and hold him, “I don’t think I am the only one either.” We looked at the door as several lads came in with our belongings. After putting everything into the other rooms Farrell lifted Lachlan to his shoulder as I took Crystal. Wynn slipped out ahead of us and we followed him down. When we were outside we turned to walk around the huge tree houses. There was another set of twin trees with a stable between them and two houses spiraling up above. Walking bridges reached back and forth as the house went into the large branches. A gruff looking man stepped out of the stables as we started to walk by, “what are you doing here?” I glanced at him as Crystal spread her wings and mantled, “walking. What does it look like?” He growled, “don’t be stupid boy.” I moved Crystal to my wrist and lifted it before flicking it. She leaped and started flapping and rose into the air. Lachlan cried out as we felt her elation and the old man snorted, “that was dumb, its gone now.” I smiled as I watched Crystal turn before heading over the trees, “why would that be dumb?” The man laughed, “she won’t return.” I looked at him as I held my hand out to Farrell’s shoulder, “Crystal enjoys it but will return when she is ready.” His eyes narrowed, “enjoys it? How do...” I lifted and flicked my wrist and Lachlan followed his sister as he beat his wings. I looked down at Wynn and bent to lift him, “do you feel them?” I could feel the eagles and see what they saw and Wynn leaned against me as he let their emotions and images fill him. Farrell laughed, “just remind them not to use their claws when they land.” I smiled before shaking myself and looking at the old man. He was staring into my face, “you’re linked to all three?” I nodded and he smiled, “than you are very lucky.” I started walking again, “have a nice day.” The area behind the houses was filled with practice yards that hadn’t been used in a long time. As we returned to the front there were a dozen brightly dressed men and women. I set Wynn down, “they are coming back.” Farrell looked up and grinned, “gliding.” I straightened and held up my arm as I reached out to Crystal. She tilted her wings and changed her angle and at the last minute back winged as she reached out. I caught her and she shifted before settling. I held her out close to Farrell’s shoulder and she walked off and onto him. I turned to lift my arm as Lachlan back winged and reached out to grab my wrist tight. I shifted as I took his weight and waited for him to get his balance. He moved up my arm and turned after reaching my shoulder. I looked at him, “you need to work on your landings.” One of the men laughed, “how much for the birds?” I started for the stairs, “they aren’t for sale.” He stepped in front of me, “they are to me.” I looked into his eyes, “move.” He snorted, “use the servants entrance.” I turned as Lachlan moved down my arm and held my wrist out next to Farrell’s other shoulder. I turned back and looked at the man, “move.” He fingered his dagger and I struck into his solar plexus and grabbed his throat, “get in my way again and I will beat you until you can’t stand.” Several men started towards me as my grandfather appeared, “Kevin?” They stopped as I released the fool and glanced at him, “yes?” He smiled, “trouble?” I looked at the man trying to get his breath, “no.” I used my magic and reached out to push the men aside as I turned to take Lachlan and climb the steps. Wynn followed as the men and women whispered. Grandfather led us to the left and into a large dinning hall, “fighting?” I smiled as I looked around, “he didn’t move well enough to fight me.” He laughed and looked at me, “he is the younger son of Duke Ash.” He gestured to chairs at the head table as others began coming in. I lifted Lachlan to a candelabra stand and Farrell added Crystal to the other side. I lifted Wynn to the table before sitting, “so what are we doing here?” He sighed, “showing the other high lords that my grandson is alive.” I looked at him as the room filled and men and women sat at other tables. A tall slim man walked through the side door and the room went silent. I could almost feel something as he crossed to the head table and pulled out a chair to sit. I knew this was the man that had been sending men to kill me and looked at my grandfather, “my uncle Cameron?” His lips were thin as he nodded and I stood, “I don’t eat with cowards.” I turned to lift Wynn to the floor as the room went silent. My uncle stood, “what did you say?” I lifted Crystal down and onto my shoulder and then Lachlan before looking at him, “anyone that pays another to kill is a coward.” I started for the far door and he cleared his throat. I glanced back and he looked at me with contempt, “you have no proof.” I laughed, “you just told me it was you.” I left and climbed the stairs and went to our room. I put the two eagles on their stands before looking out the window. It was several minutes before there was a knock. I went to open the door and Christopher walked in with a heavy tray. He smiled, “the cook heard what happened and sent this up.” I nodded as he uncovered it, “she sent something for the little ones too.” I grinned, “tell her thank you for me.” He set the tray on a table, “take care master. Prince Cameron is a cruel man.” I watched as he left and started feeding Wynn, Lachlan and Crystal. After Wynn stretched out in the window I stretched and began exercises I hadn’t been doing for awhile. I glanced at Farrell when he walked in and he smiled as he sat, “your uncle protested your words. Your grandfather told him loud enough for the hall to hear to prove it wasn’t him.” He snorted, “I think you surprised him and made him think.” I relaxed, “he or one of his will try to come for me.” Farrell glanced at the window, “he will use magic.” I thought about it before grinning, “perhaps I will set a few snares.” He grinned, “magical?” I nodded, “just like in the woods, people tend to follow paths.” Farrell glanced at the door and I grinned, “we aren’t going to stay long. I got a look at charts while we were at sea. We could take a ship north west to the river mouth of the Black River and travel through the mountains following the river. That would take us into the Black Woods and eventually Black Lake.” Farrell grinned, “I could leads us the rest of the way.” I smiled, “I would rather travel through forest than over the plains.” He nodded and I stretched before walking to the door. I thought about what I wanted to do and touched the emerald as I pulled magic and thought of how to catch something. Glowing energy spider webbed the door and slowly spread along the wall before fading. When I stopped I went to the large window. I caressed Wynn as I sent my thoughts to him, “do not touch the door or window.” He glanced across the room before looking at the window. I reached out to touch it as I repeated what I had done before. When I was done I went to look in the sleeping chamber and went to the window in there. I also went into Farrell’s room and repeated it on that window. I moved Crystal and Lachlan into my room and set them on the cross piece for the foot of the bed. Wynn followed and climbed up to lay at the foot near them as I undressed and laid back. I woke to a scream in my mind and glanced around before slipping out of bed. Wynn was missing from the bed and I pulled a dagger and my sword as I moved to the open door. I found Wynn sitting facing the door with something struggling in the glowing web. I moved closer and whispered as I knelt beside the cub, “you felt it?” He looked at me and I could feel his pleasure at the trapped intruder. I reached out and pulled and the scream almost echoed through the building. I turned as a glowing specter lifted up through the floor, “Kevin?” I waited as it moved closer before stopping to one side, “that was dumb of him.” I smiled, “you took a chance I wouldn’t trap the floor.” My grandfather glanced at me, “I know foresters.” I spun to face the window as another figure was caught and began screaming, “I think you have a lot of rats in your house.” I gestured and pulled and the scream from the window turned to agony. I closed my eyes and let my senses fill the room and accepted the magic and power the snares took from the two that were trapped. When they faded I sighed and opened my eyes to look at the specter, “you should leave.” He nodded and began sinking into the floor. I waited until he was gone before using my magic and the new power I had gained to add and spread the magical snare through the walls, roof and floor. I headed back to bed with Wynn walking in front of me. I woke a few hours later to a dozen screams and shook my head as I turned and glanced at Wynn. Morning came with bright colors and a knock at the door. I slipped out of bed and walked out to open it. Christopher bowed, “there has been much trouble. Young men from court have had their power and magic taken. Your uncle has accused you.” I grinned as I turned and reached out to strip the snares away, “it was me in a way.” He followed me in and glanced at Farrell in the other doorway, “this is serious young lord.” I snorted as I headed to my room to dress, “yes it is.” I glanced back, “those with their magic stripped attempted to enter my rooms with magic.” He stopped walking, “you can prove this?” I opened my pack and began to dress, “that part will be easy.” I looked at him, “proving my uncle had them do it will be hard.” I went to lift Lachlan and Crystal to my shoulders, “come on Wynn, lets go find breakfast.” Farrell was waiting and fell in as we followed Christopher down to the dinning hall. The voices fell silent when we walked in and my uncle turned from facing my grandfather, “there he is!” I smiled and reached out with my magic to snatch him off his feet as I started across the floor, “never send a child to do a man’s business uncle. You want me dead than pick a weapon or the next time I will cut your throat.” He was gasping and struggling as I held him easily with my magic. Several people stood and looked at my grandfather. He stood, “Kevin.” I dropped my uncle and looked around, “I am not a coward that hides in the dark. Send your thugs after me and I will deal with them as their action tell me too.” I gestured and whispered and the physic energy from the snare sprang up across one wall with the glowing images caught in it. I looked at my uncle, “you may have killed others uncle but I am not them. Cross me again and I will come for you.” I looked at my grandfather, “you have one week before I leave.” I looked around at everyone, “my mother was the one my father choose and I am their son. I really don’t care if you like it.” I turned and glanced at Farrell, “I think we will enjoy breakfast more in the kitchen.” We walked out and followed Christopher down a hallway. We walked into a huge kitchen with dozens of workers who stopped and looked at us. I smiled as Crystal stretched her wings, “excuse me but would you happen to have a quiet nook we could use and a bit of breakfast?” A small skinny woman pushed another out of her way as she walked around a long cutting table, “nobles eat in the hall.” I looked down at Wynn by my feet, “we have not grown up as nobles and I would rather enjoy your company than theirs.” She followed my look and smiled, “come.” She looked around and all the workers suddenly found something to do. The small table was in an alcove looking out on an herb garden. She smiled and went to bring back two bowls of porridge and a small plate of cut up meat. She bent to lift Wynn to the table, “Miss Emily brings her Georgia in here when she comes to stay.” I smiled and moved first Crystal and then Lachlan to the table, “this is Crystal and Lachlan.” The woman caressed the head of both as they waddled to the plate of meat, “I’m Mirrim.” I smiled, “I’m Kevin and this is Farrell.” After we ate I took the two eagles out back and let them stretch their wings on a couple of limbs. Wynn laid down to one side as I stretched and started exercises and Farrell wandered away. When I finished I went to Lachlan and lifted him on my wrist, “fly around the house and return.” He shifted and spread his wings before crouching. I moved my arm before tossing him and he leaped as he started beating his wings. I watched as he flew and closed my eyes to see through his. I felt Crystal and then Wynn when they joined me and Lachlan screamed in pleasure as he flew higher. He shifted and turned and rocked back and forth before twisting and diving towards me on the ground. I held my arm out as he snapped his wings open and tilted them to catch the air. I sighed as I opened my eyes and he landed heavily. I turned and let him move onto the branch before letting Crystal take his place. She was eager for her turn and spread her wings and crouched as I turned. I saw grandfather as I tossed her and she started climbing. I closed my eyes to be with her and the others joined me as she screamed in joy and looked around at the ground below. When she returned and landed on my arm I opened my eyes to see grandfather in front of me. I smiled and moved her to the branch before looking at Wynn, “now it is your turn. Stalk and climb.” He yawned before standing and grandfather chuckled, “scamp.” I grinned and closed my eyes, “he is pretending.” Crystal and Lachlan slipped in and we watched as Wynn leaped and caught a tree trunk before climbing. He moved easily through the branches, leaping from one to another. I grinned as I turned and opened my eyes to catch him as he leaped. I gave him a hug and set him down before standing to look at my grandfather, “how can I help you?” He sighed and turned to look at the house, “my council is meeting and they need to examine you.” I looked at him carefully, “is my uncle on the council?” He nodded and I sighed, “very well but he will find I will not allow one I think an enemy to touch me in anyway.” My grandfather nodded and I turned to move Crystal and Lachlan onto my shoulders. Wynn followed as I walked with my grandfather. When I walked into the large room the men went silent. I continued to stand as my grandfather stepped forward, “this is Kevin sen Dangul. He is the eldest son of my son and my heir.” My uncle snorted, “that remains to be seen.” I stepped forward, “you wish to contest that I am my father’s son?” He looked around before smirking, “as far as we know you are a bastard with...” I gestured and snatched him out of his chair and threw him across the room, “insult my mother again and I will kill you.” He stood slowly and glared as another council member cleared his throat, “he meant no...” I looked at him, “he meant to insult me.” I pulled a small dagger and walked to the large table before pricking my finger to let several drops of blood fall. I looked at those around the table, “if you have doubts use your magic to summon the image of my parents.” One stood and looked at the others before stepping closer. I felt his magic surge and reach out to touch the blood on the table. Two images rose and grew until I was looking at my father and mother. My uncle walked towards the table and I felt his magic. Mine exploded out of me and slashed across the spell seeking my blood on the table. He jerked back with a cry as the other councilors stood. I took a step and snarled, “I warned you once.” Another councilor took a step, “Cameron has the right to examine you.” I pulled my sword and stepped towards my uncle, “no he does not. He is in the line of ascension which means he is an heir.” The councilors looked at each other as my grandfather cleared his throat, “my grandson is correct. Cameron is the next in line which means he does not have the right to examine my heir.” I gestured to the images floating above the table, “as you can see my father was Edan sen Dangul and my mother Cordelia Sanclare.” I waited and turned towards the door as my magic reached for the blood and there was a white hot flash of power as it was destroyed. At the door I turned to point my sword at my uncle, “when next I see you it will be to take your life. The spell you tried to use on my blood was a leach spell and not one of discovery.” I walked out as I put my sword away and glanced at Wynn as he trotted ahead of me. Crystal and Lachlan both had been silent the whole time but I had felt their fear and anger too. I sighed as I tried to calm down. I walked outside and turned to head for the for the stables, “want to fly again?” Crystal and Lachlan perked up and shifted and I could hear Wynn complain. I smiled as I walked into the huge stable. The man from yesterday appeared with several lads, one was the young man that I had struck. The older man smiled, “so you are free.” I looked at him as the young man frowned, “why wouldn’t I be?” He grinned, “I expected you to still be stuck with the councilors.” I shook my head, “a waste of time, I am who I am and will not play their games.” He nodded and looked around, “and what brings you here?” I gestured, “my horse.” He touched a lad, “saddle it and my own.” He paused, “saddle Edwin’s too.” I looked at him and he grinned, “my son got a wake up call. He and the others were waiting for you. He decided not to do as your uncle asked which saved him but not many of his friends.” I glanced at the young man, “they were the ones that tried to attacked me in my rooms?” He nodded and looked at his father, “I told them it was dumb.” When the horses were brought I put Crystal on the front and Lachlan behind before picking Wynn up. I was careful climbing into the saddle and let Wynn find his place before starting the horse moving. I turned to Lachlan and let him climb onto my wrist before holding it out. Once we were clear of the barn I helped him leap into the air. I repeated it with Crystal and watched as she headed towards the upper branches. The older man cleared his throat, “I’m Duke Ashley.” I nodded and pet Wynn as he closed his eyes and pretended to sleep, “Kevin.” He grinned, “are you going to stay?” I glanced at him and his son, “I promised to help Farrell return to his home.” He nodded, “but you will accept your grandfather’s crown.” I looked at him, “why does everyone keep asking that?” The duke smiled, “your grandfather has been king a long time and your uncle would not be a good choice to succeed him.” I snorted as I watched and felt the two eagles turn and shift before Crystal dove. I grinned as she pounced on the rabbit and screamed. Wynn stood and I shook my head before swinging off and setting him down, “you can ask her to share.” He ran through the grass but I felt him and Crystal as Lachlan landed on a branch. I swung up onto my horse and grinned at the duke and his son, “Crystal just made her first kill and he wants some.” They laughed as we rode closer and then sat to watch and look around. I smiled as Crystal leaped into the air and Wynn tried to drag the remains after him. I shook my head as I climbed down, “let it go.” He growled and I heard Crystal and Lachlan chiding him. I lifted him and climbed back into the saddle. He lay in my lap purring as we started riding again. The duke cleared his throat, “I was thinking my son could use a little outside experience.” I glanced at Edwin and then at the duke as I turned to ride closer to the lake, “I don’t know how long I will be gone. I need to help Farrell return to his people and then go back to see a few people before I return.” We were quiet as I turned and headed back to the stable. I watched Crystal and Lachlan fly and land on a high branch before we entered the stable and swung down to set Wynn on the ground, “there may be a nice rat if you hunt it.” His ears flicked as his curiosity peeked and he looked around before heading towards a large pile of hay. I grinned as the duke and Edwin laughed and turned to unsaddle the horse. I let a stable boy lead Kern away and looked at Edwin, “if you wish you may come with us.” He smiled and nodded as I headed towards the stable door. Farrell was waiting and looking around when I came out, “the servants said the council confirmed you.” I smiled and glanced back as Wynn suddenly rushed into a corner after a rat, “that is good, now we can leave.” He grinned, “what will you do when you must return and stay?” I looked at the huge manor and shook my head, “probably crack a few heads. They are all arrogant and unpleasant.” He laughed and glanced down as Wynn walked out proudly with a large rat in his mouth, “so find those that don’t irritate you for councilors, like Christopher.” I grinned, “and Mirrim?” He grinned and nodded as we started walking towards the back of the manor. I lifted an arm when I felt Lachlan gliding towards me and he back winged as he reached out. His feet grabbed my wrist and he closed his wings as he stuck his chest out proudly. Farrell laughed as he reached over and let him step onto his wrist. I glanced at Mirrim by the back door bargaining with a farmer and held my arm up for Crystal. They turned to watch as the solid white eagle back winged and landed and then started side stepping onto my shoulder. I glanced down at Wynn with the rat still in his mouth, “either eat it or drop it.” I knew he wasn’t hungry and finally dropped it before walking beside me as I headed for the door. As we climbed the stairs I reached out and felt the floor around and in front of us. I stopped before entering our rooms and held Farrell back as I felt a sense of wrongness. I shook my head, “my uncle or one of his followers left a trap.” I looked at the eagles and grinned as I had an idea. I turned to set Crystal on the stair rail and whispered what I was thinking as I fed magic into it. I glanced at Farrell before going to open the door. It felt like a wind shifting around us as it blew into the room. There was a roar as magic came alive and wrapped around what almost looked like a form. It splintered in the magic’s grip with the sound of breaking glass before a whirlwind of tiny shards started sweeping through the magic. It screamed and tried to flee but the shards followed to cut and slice before it finally escaped. I smiled, “want to bet my uncle has a few cuts now?” I lifted Crystal and carried her into the room with Wynn leading the way. I put her on the stand and Farrell added Lachlan. I bent and lifted Wynn to the window sill and he sat and stared out. I looked at Farrell, “I think tomorrow we will be heading back to the port to find a ship.” He nodded as I headed for the door, “time to find my uncle.” I knew he followed as I started hunting the whispered trail of torn magic. It went up and so did I, I passed Christopher and another servant cleaning a trail of blood on the landing of the stairs. I went all the way up and came out on a walkway that crossed to another tree with a house higher up. I smiled, “hide uncle but I will find you.” I looked at the walkway and Farrell caught my shoulder as I started to step onto it. He pointed to the wooden supports and I saw colonies of termites with dust drifting down. I frowned and looked around before pointing to a higher branch to one side with another bridge across to the house. I turned and began searching for a way up and after awhile I found it. I had ignored the servants when they began following and then the few nobles. When I started across the new walkway after checking it my grandfather caught up, “what are you doing? Your eagles and that young snow cat are screaming and...” I looked at him and he quieted, “what did Cameron do?” I turned and continue across the bridge, “left a trap in my rooms.” He caught up, “can you prove this?” I smiled, “whoever left the trap will have a lot of cuts and they will keep coming back so a simple healing won’t work.” I stopped at the door into the house and started to touch the door when grandfather caught my hand. He gestured and it was as if a fire roared past and the door exploded into the house. There was no real fire though, just the feeling of one. I looked in and stepped through the doorway. I searched and there was a lot of signs of blood but my uncle was gone. A simple test confirmed to everyone that the blood was his. |
