Introduction: A Phoenix is born

I glanced around as I walked to one side of the young prince. My ear piece was constantly talking and giving orders, directions and making inquiries. The private school the prince had been going to was out for the summer and we were heading home. There was over twenty men on the detail and we had three scram jet sting ships for escort once the suborbital took off.

I nodded to the four men waiting at the boarding hatch and let the prince go in before following. He headed towards one of the large comfortable seats as I moved to the security comp. The ship captain glanced at me on his was forward, “everything is looking good sergeant major.”

I nodded and began my own check of the ship’s systems. My men began loading the prince’s baggage and our gear. I frowned at something in the nav system and began checking it as we started moving. The system was working perfectly and I shook my head while trying to track the anomaly down. We took off and began to ascend and accelerate.

We had almost reached apogee when I realized what the anomaly was. I spun and yelled as I ran for the prince, “Abort! Shut everything down!”

I grabbed the started lad and lifted him as I continued towards the rear, “Royal Sting this is Knight seven we have an active seeker aboard and broadcasting!”

I pushed the prince against the bulkhead as I started stripping with my men moving towards me, “Royal orbital control this Knight seven, I am declaring an emergency and initiating failsafe.”

I heard one of my men curse, “inbound kinetic missiles!”

I spun the prince as I stuffed him into my body screen and then turned it on and moved him into the safe pod. I closed and sealed the hatch before slapping the ejection button. I was smashed against the wall as the pod was kicked straight down and out of the suborbital, “Royal three has gone silent. Royal Stings break and provide cover.”

The explosion ripped the engines off and spun the ship as everything went dark. I knew what was coming as another explosion hit the ship and ripped it open. Crash foam exploded and I was knocked forward through it and into the security control section. The armor screen snapped closed and I was locked in and tossed around.

It was a long time before there was the jarring impact and everything went dark. I came to in a bed, the room was bare with only medical equipment. I shifted and the door opened as a tall man walked in and across to the bed, “colonel Storm good to see you back.”

I frowned as I tried to feel myself, “how is the prince?”

The man glanced back before looking at the equipment, “you were very lucky. You were the only one to survive and only with deep bruises and a concussion.”

I looked at the door where a guard stood. I looked at the man, “who is in charge?”

He straightened, “I’m sure they will be here shortly.”

He walked out and I began removing wires and the IV. The door opened again and I stiffened as an older man walked in. Another man closed the door and leaned against the wall. I cleared my throat, “your grandson sir?”

The emperor smiled, “alive and well thanks to you.”

He put his hand on my shoulder, “now I must ask you for your life once more.”

I smiled, “my life has always been yours.”

He smiled, “sergeant major Jonathan L Harris has died. Colonel Phoenix Storm has been reborn. I need you to create a team. Your mission is to investigate our security, support and everything they use to do their job. Your first mission is to find the bastards that tried to kill my grandson.”

He pulled out a small packet and handed it to me, “everything you need is in here. The comm code is for my private line and will go straight to me. Only three people know about this, me and my son and General Edwards.”

He glanced at the man leaning against the wall, “the Ident in the package will give you access to anything or anywhere you need to go. It will also give you priority access to my family at anytime.”

He looked at me once more before turning, “when you find the traitor that killed your men and tried to kill my grandson...”

He turned at the door and looked back, “kill them.”

I nodded and he left as I slowly moved off the bed, I was sore but had things to do. I was able to get a set of hospital greens before I left. The packet was complete with the new Ident and even an account. First was to check the address for a man I wanted. I also made a few very discrete calls to make other arrangements.

I dressed in a nice suit before watching the apartment of the man I wanted. When he went out I broke in and made a search before sitting in a comfortable chair. He walked in an hour later and froze when he saw me. He licked his lips and looked around, “who are you?”

I smiled and gestured, “sit.”

He slowly moved to sit across from me, “who are you?”

I leaned back, “you are David Merrick. A known Viral Comp hacker.”

He looked around, “that was never proved.”

I leaned forward, “because you never went after the government or the emperor. I was the one to make the evidence go away. I have studied you throughly, you are a loyal subject to the emperor.”

He blushed and shrugged, “yeah well...”

I pulled out my comp and made a call, “Sir I have someone I wish to add to my team. His name is David Merrick.”

I held the comm out to David, “the emperor wishes to speak with you.”

I walked into the shop and glanced at the man under the grav lift. I smiled and waited for him to turn, “Paul Sanchez?”

He frowned, “you look familiar.”

I walked towards him, “I have a job to offer you.”

He snorted and looked up at the vehicle on the lift, “I have a job.”

I walked around outside of the lift area, “you are an expert on air, water and land vehicles as well as certified on space engineering.”

He nodded and I smiled, “I need your help finding the people that killed your brother.”

His eyes widened and then narrowed, “you are supposed to be dead.”

I nodded, “I am.”

He looked up for several moments before looking at me, “was it worth it?”

I smiled, “I would die for the emperor or his grandson. He did nothing to be attacked and your brother knew and gave his life because he believed it was right.”

He shook his head, “and now you want me.”

I looked at him, “our first mission is to find the men that caused your brother’s death.”

He walked to me and held out his hand, “I’m in.”

I walked into the old fashioned gentlemen’s club and nodded to the door man, “Edward Christian?”

He looked me over before gesturing to a side door, “he just stepped out with a couple of gentlemen.”

I started for the door and heard yells and then a scream. I took a few quick steps and shoved the door open. A well dressed man turned with a sword in his hand. The two men on the floor were wiggling and squirming as they pleaded. I looked at them and back at him, “clients that didn’t want anyone else to know what you made?”

He snorted and looked at them, “you might say that.”

He slipped the sword back into the cane it came from, “is there something I can do for you?”

I looked into his eyes, “you could say Daniel Morris sent me.”

He stiffened before gesturing to the door, “perhaps we should speak in private.”

I stirred him away from a private room a few minutes later and towards an outside door. He glanced at me until we were outside and then looked around carefully as we walked, “how do you know Daniel?”

I seemed to ignored the vehicle with a man watching the club, “he was your lover and spoke highly of you.”

He looked at me as I turned and pulled the pistol I was carrying. I aimed at the man stepping out of the vehicle and lifting a rifle. I fired and he spun before falling and I turned to put the pistol away as I started walking again, “I am hunting the men responsible for killing Daniel.”

He smiled, “I’m in.”

It was dark when I walked through the large building courtyard. I paused when I felt another presence and glanced around. I smiled and turned to walk to the ground floor apartment door. I used a device to unlock the door and left it open as I walked in. I went into the kitchen and started a pot of water before pulling out the ceramic pot with the tea leaves.

“You are either very bold or really dumb.”

I filled two metal screen balls with leaves before getting out two cups. I set the balls in the cups before turning. Takara gasped, “Jonathan!”

I smiled, “the name is different now Takara.”

I gestured to the kitchen stool, “I need someone with your skills.”

I turned to pour the hot water into the two cups. I brought both to the kitchen counter and set hers in front of her, “I was the only one beside the prince to live. Your father was on the bridge.”

She sighed as she lifted the cup to sip and set it down. I waited and blew to cool mine and she finally nodded, “what is the job?”

I smiled, “serving the emperor what else is there?”

She snorted and then smiled, “you sound like dad.”

I took a drink of tea and set the cup down, “someone slipped in and put a seeker in the nav system. It went active when we reached apogee.”

She looked into my eyes and I gestured to her tea, “I am starting a team to investigate our security, support and everything they use to do their job. Our first mission is to find whoever slipped that seeker into the ship’s system and killed my people.”

Takara sipped her tea, “and when you find them?”

I touched her hand, “we execute them with extreme prejudice.”

She growled, “I’m in.”

I walked into the large common area where David, Paul, Edward and Takara were watching each other. General Edwards had sent a packet for each of them and I walked to the central table and set them down, “time to get to work.”

I waited for them to gather around before looking at David, “the nav system backup in the black box is your target. It is in the imperial fleet recovery data net. Your password into the system is your name.”

He nodded and I looked at Paul, “how did they get it into the system?”

He frowned and I looked at Edward, “how did they manage to fire two kinetic missiles without us detecting them or locating the launch site?”

He nodded and I looked at Takara, “head to Brookhurst. I need to know how they managed to avoid the guards and reached the suborbital.”

She nodded and I looked at them, “I will be reviewing the coming movements of the emperor’s family.”

I gestured and they reached for the packets. I waited until they wandered away to study what they were given before leaving. My first stop was outside the palace grounds in a small shop. The man running the shop turned and saw me and froze. I smiled as I crossed to the counter, “The name is Phoenix Storm.”

He glanced past me and out the window, “not a name I know.”

I pointed to a compact matte black twelve millimeter plasma pistol, “how many people outside of the guards knew the prince was flying instead of the scheduled hyper tram?”

Newly retired sergeant major Douglas pulled the pistol out and slid it across the counter, “lets see, the support personnel for the suborbital. The Chancellor and the emperor’s personal counselor and the emperor.”

I checked the pistol carefully, “why would the Chancellor know? He is the leader of the opposition party.”

He snorted, “he moved prince Joseph’s council appointment up so the tram would never have gotten him here in time.”

I nodded and slipped my comp across the counter to pay for the weapon, “I’ll need a dozen magazines and a holster.”

He nodded, “small of the back?”

I smiled as he turned, “what are you going to do when you catch the traitor?”

I waited until he glanced at me and he finally nodded after looking into my eyes, “good.”

He pushed the holstered pistol across with my untouched comp and I took it and slipped it into the small of my back. I accepted the other magazines in a small case, “see you around sergeant major.”

I walked out and headed down the street and stopped on a corner. I ignored the guards looking at me from the side gate and marked the post beside me with a cross. I nodded to the guards before crossing and walking away. I pulled my comm and called David, “I have something for you.”

“The seeker code is very unique.”

I glanced around, “I need everything you can find on the Chancellor.”

“Okay... why?”

I stepped into the coffee shop, “lets just say he was responsible for certain changes that led to an accident.”

“I will start checking.”

I sat at the table across from the general and ignored the few guards sitting at another table. He pushed a data screen across and I picked it up and started looking. I frowned at a few changed I recognized, I looked at him and highlighted the changes. I pushed it back across, “change this again and make sure the changes don’t go above the guards.”

He looked at the screen, “these were for...”

I cleared my throat, “I don’t want to know what they were for. I have my reason for telling you to make the change.”

He straightened, “you have a lead?”

I stood, “tell the boss if this is the one there will be a lot of trouble from the opposition council.”

The general stood, “not if you take care of it.”

I smiled, “I intend to take care of it but there will still be trouble.”

He frowned, “how high?”

I turned towards the door, “at his side.”

I walked out and to the vehicle and left. I returned to our building and the common room. Paul and Edward were talking and looked at me when I walked in. I sat across from them and Edward cleared his throat, “The missiles were issue but the launcher was custom made.”

I looked at him and he shrugged, “after the missiles were fired the platform sank or submerged. I know who made it.”

I nodded and pulled out a small silver guard coin before tossing it, “go pay him a visit. I want the person that paid him and the people that fired it.”

He stood and I looked at Paul, “how did they get it into the suborbital?”

He shook his head, “they didn’t have to board the ship. There is a system panel under the nose by the landing strut.”

I sat back, “how long would it take?”

Paul shrugged, “thirty seconds.”

I nodded, “I need complete information on a Sierra Gold vehicle.”

He blinked, “how detailed?”

I stood, “I want to know how to remotely disable it and shut everything down without using a missile. I want information on the seats, floor and roof liner.”

He looked at me as his eyes narrowed, “you have someone in mind?”

I nodded as I headed for my room for a few hours of sleep. I woke as I was moving to grab my pistol. A female laid on me as her hand caught mine, “you don’t need that.”

I put my arms around her, “what did you find?”

Takara growled as she put her head on my shoulder, “whoever it was did it at night. They couldn’t come through the upper terminal or through the maintenance area because of the vid coverage. I found a couple of small foot prints around the outer edge of the building. A small man with size eight feet.”

I was thinking as I held her, “not a woman?”

She shook her head, “the feet were to wide and I recognized the boot print as a man’s boot.”

I shifted her off me as I rolled out of bed. I began dressing and walked out and down to another door before knocking. A minute later David opened the door, “I’m still...”

I cut him off as I pushed into his room, one whole end was covered in comp screens with comps stacked and linked under them. I turned to look at him, “The Chancellor’s senior bodyguard, a short man with dark hair. Check flyer rentals in Brookhurst and the vids at the hyper tram.”

I glanced at the door as Takara and Paul stopped in it. David moved around to the comps and sat, “the Chancellor paid a guard named Simon Allen ten million credits.”

It was a minute before he turned and I watched the vid on one monitor as the small man boarded the tram. I looked at David, “did you find the man that made the seeker?”

He nodded and I held out my hand, “I need the name and address.”

He looked at me for a minute and then smiled, “no trial.”

I growled as he wrote, “you gave him the only trial he will ever get.”

He handed the film to me and I turned, “Takara take Paul and pay this person a visit.”

I pulled another small silver guard coin and gave it to him and the film to her, “don’t linger I have another target for you.”

I turned to David, “I want the address for Simon Allen.”

He picked up another film, “I checked and he doesn’t have his comp linked at home and there are no vids.”

I accepted the film, “you have a comp with a vid camera?”

He grinned and turned to pick a small comp up, “it’s a remote vid feed to my system.”

I nodded as I slipped it into my pocket and turned to leave. The house was small and isolated in a small patch of woods. I slipped through dark woods and avoided several barely noticeable traps. I entered through the front door and stopped to look around. I went through the house without touching anything before setting up the remote vid.

I set out the four tiny zap field generators by the back door and stood in a corner to wait. It was a few hours before the backdoor opened. The small man walked in and stopped to look around. I touched the zap field remote and he jerked and spasmed before collapsing. I moved to him and secured his wrists before moving him to a chair.

I waited for him to recover and look around before I stepped out. He looked at me and his eyes widened, “your dead.”

I looked into his eyes coldly, “I want all the names.”

He smiled, “charge me.”

I pulled a wand, “you will tell me and when I finish I will kill you.”

His eyes widened, “but...”

I touched his chest with the wand and he screamed. I held the wand against his chest for a few minutes before pulling it back, “you killed nineteen of my men and you tried to kill a child. I have no mercy for you.”

He looked at me as he tried to breath, “you can’t do this.”

I touched his leg and he began to scream again. It wasn’t long before he talked and gave me the names I wanted. I looked at him calmly as I pulled the compact plasma pistol and shot him between the eyes. I dropped a silver guard coin on his lap before removing the zap generators and the remote vid.

I slipped out and walked away silently, the only name left was the Chancellor. I returned to the common room of our building. David was a little pale as he sat in front of a holographic fire. I sat beside him, “we had to be sure there were no other names.”

He nodded and I smiled, “I have a job for you.”

He looked at me and I looked into the flickering flames, “the Chancellor always has lunch at the Nobles gentlemen club. I need the vid coverage off tomorrow. After he is dead I want you to break into his data net and suck it dry.”

He nodded, “In case there are more names.”

I shook my head, “in case he has already set another attempt in motion.”

He hissed and looked at me, “but...”

I stood, “he started with prince Joseph but he would try to go after the whole family.”

He stood and turned, “I need to look at what I found on him before.”

I watched him walk away and headed to the kitchen. I boiled water and was making tea when Paul and Takara walked in. Paul smiled, “the bastard said he would do it again after he got out. He actually looked surprised before I shot him.”

I made tea for both of them and glanced at the door when it opened again and Edward walked in. He crossed to us, “they are dead.”

I nodded and looked at the three of them, “okay the point of contact was Simon Allen. He paid the arms dealer for the weapons and to fire them. He paid the comp hacker to create the seeker and he was the one to upload it into the suborbital. He was paid and ordered to do it by the Chancellor.”

They looked at each other and I took a drink of my tea before continuing, “the orders from the emperor were clear and I intend to finish this.”

I looked at each of them, “the Chancellor goes to lunch at the Nobles gentlemen club everyday. Edward I need two things, something to kill everyone in the vehicle.”

I tossed him a small pouch, “and an explosive devise to put those twenty coins into the asshole.”

I looked at Paul, “I want to disable his Sierra Gold when he returns to the Assembly Hall.”

He smiled, “you want to send a message.”

I looked at Takara, “I need you to plant the devises Edward makes.”

She nodded, “gladly.”

I took another drink of tea as they left. I made a call and a voice I knew answered, “Sergeant major Diamond.”

I smiled, “have you chosen a crest?”

“Who... Jonathan?”

I looked into the other room, “he is dead. Wait a few days to have the crest made and let the men know to stay away from Assembly Hall.”

I ended the call and made breakfast before cleaning up. When Edward came into the room he held two small packages. Takara stood and I blinked because I hadn’t seen her. She spoke with Edward and left a few minutes later with Paul.

David came out a minute later and started making breakfast, “there were no other expenses but he did make a lot of calls to Santa Miguel but not to any government office.”

I growled and spun to pull out my comm, “get the team covering Prince George. Have them change all their travel plans and go to their backup movement plans and they are to go to full alert. There is a positive threat on the prince.”

I cut the comm before he could ask questions and looked at David, “once you suck everything from his data net go through it carefully.”

He nodded and I headed towards the door and Edward fell in beside me. I spent hours waiting with Edward and when the vehicle pulled up I looked around for Takara or Paul. I looked back when the back doors opened and they got in. I frowned and Takara smiled sweetly, “why do it here when the Assembly Hall parking area is more isolated?”

I smiled and turned to watch the two men guarding the vehicle before driving away, “you have the remote?”

Edward cleared his throat and I nodded as I drove. An hour later we were sipping coffee in a busy outdoor restaurant that looked across to the Assembly Hall steps. When the Chancellor’s vehicle pulled up Paul touched a tiny fob. I knew the vehicle had just shut down and locked up.

Edward touched a two button remote and slid it to me. I touched the second button and there was a muffled explosion from the distant vehicle. I turned the remote vid feed off, “there may be another plot active on Santa Miguel. We won’t know until David goes through his data net.”

I glanced around as dozens of emergency vehicles arrived across the busy boulevard, “lets head back and relax.”

It was a couple of hours before I got a call. Takara was playing 3d chest with Edward and Paul was designing something on a corner holograph table. I answered, “yes?”

“Are you sure he was the one?”

I sat back, “yes sir. What I am worried about is if he had other plans running. I do have information he made contact with someone on Santa Miguel.”

He hissed, “so that is why the... my son is cutting his trip short and returning home.”

I glanced at David’s closed door, “I will know more when we finish.”

“The opposition is screaming that I did this.”

I smiled, “the coins were a message and I think even the opposition will get it.”

He snorted and then chuckled, “you gave out your own coins but changed them from bronze to silver.”

I looked at David walking out, “silver is for traitors. There won’t be anymore.”

He sighed, “Let me knew what you find.”

I ended the call as David sat, he had a serious expression, “he had plans to kill the whole family but nothing else was starting. The calls to Santa Miguel were to purchase a private space shuttle under construction.”

I sighed and nodded, “did you drain his accounts?”

He grinned, “of course. I started one for us under the name Phoenix.”
