Karen looked at Ann in the rear view mirror. “Ann Sweetie, I was thinking that since it didn’t take long at the doctor’s office and we have lots of time until lunch, that maybe you would like to go to the park?” Karen also watched the road. Ann Smiled. “There’s a park!? That sounds fun!” Karen glanced at Ann and Smiled. “Yes, I thought you might like to have some fun too and maybe make some friends. There are some other parents who bring their children too.” Ann then grew more curious. “They have others that are like me?” Karen smiled warmly. “Why yes sweetie. Just like you.” Ann thought about it. “I am still having some difficulty understanding the way it works with the adoptions mommy.” Karen smiled warmly. “I’ll tell you what, when daddy comes home from work tonight we will tell you all about what they did when we adopted you. Every case is different, so I am not sure about other cases. How about that sweetie? Would that help satisfy your curiosity?” Ann Smiled. “I would like that very much!!” Ann looked out the window happily. They had reached the park now and Karen pulled into a parking spot. Karen got out and then she let Ann out of the car seat and set her on the ground. Ann looked around, everything seemed so huge and it was a bit intimidating but she felt safe around her new mommy so she stayed close to Karen’s leg. She was also very excited to be going to the park for it had been years since she had the chance to play on a playground. As they stood there with Ann clutched to Karen’s leg, she saw there were others like her that were playing and running around. She felt butterflies in her stomach. Ann looked up at Karen, who smiled at her warmly, and held her hand out. If ever there was a smile that had so much warmth and love, that was Karen’s smile. Ann took her hand and they walked over to the swings. Ann looked at all the others and saw one that looked really pretty in a little frilly dress come running towards them. This really surprised her so she hid behind Karen. Ann peeked out and saw that it was actually a young man dressed up as a girl. This intrigued Ann, so she came out from behind Karen just a little. She waved at Karen as she ran to her. “Hello Mrs. Stevenson!!” Then she saw Ann beside Karen. She looked surprised. Ann looked up at Karen as she clung onto Karen’s leg. “Why, Hello Sarah!” She smiled and kneeled down to Ann and held Ann in her arms with her facing Sarah. “Ann Sweetie, this is Sarah, and her mother is my best friend and this is her little girl.” Sarah’s eyes got wide and she exclaimed. “Oh! This is Ann!? Oh! She is lovely!” Ann Smiled. Sarah seemed very sweet and she seems to know Karen well. Sarah walked up to Ann. “Oh! I just know you’ll love your new mommy! She is so sweet! I have heard so much about you! She could not stop talking about you and my my, you are just as pretty as she said you were, with your big brown eyes.” She was smiling with excitement. Ann Smiled even more. She had never had many friends and Sarah seemed very sweet. Karen gently hugged Ann to her and kissed her cheek. “Ann Sweetie, do you want to go over to the swings with Sarah and play? I’ll be over at the picnic benches if you need me and I’ll be watching you. Sarah has been dying to meet you.” She said smiling. Ann blushed from the kiss and smiled. “Ok mommy. Thank you!” Sarah held out her hand for Ann and looked at Karen smiling. “I’ll take good care of her I promise!” The last time Ann could ever remember having a friend that was the type to hold your hand was Rachael. She was such a sweet girl and oh how she missed that about her. Now here was this new person, wanting to be her friend instantly and hold her hand. It felt good. Ann smiled and took her hand, thinking of Rachael. Karen stood and watched Sarah lead Ann over to the swings. Karen went over and sat at the picnic benches near her friend Becky, who was Sarah’s mommy. As soon as Ann and Sarah got to the swings, they each got one next to each other. “I’ll be your friend Ann, I like you! That is if it’s ok with you!” Sarah said as she swung herself in the swing. Ann smiled. “I would like that very much! It is nice to already find a friend so quickly.” Ann then began to swing. It felt so good to swing. She hadn’t done it in a long time. Sarah looked at the ground as she swung. “So how long have you been with your mommy?” Ann looked over at her. “Since last night.” Sarah looked at her and stopped swinging and her eyes got wide. “Wow! That fast and you’re not shocked?” Ann stopped. “That’s what everyone keeps asking.” Ann thought a moment. “Well at first I was a bit surprised but not about where I was because I knew that I was in no danger, because I was warm and in a soft bed but what kind of surprised me was the size of Karen. I always knew in my heart that there were Aliens out there, I just never imagined that they would be like Karen.” Sarah nodded. “So how did you react?” Ann thought back to that moment. “Well at first I didn’t see her immediately when I was awakened, but she was very sweet. So I looked around and saw the crib I was in and immediately I thought of when I was little in my own crib, it was nostalgic. Her voice was so motherly and it made me think of my own mother who passed away 5 years ago. But then I saw her and I was confused, but I didn’t freak out, but really didn’t know what to do so, I just laid there looking up at her all confused about why I was there. Like I said, I already knew I was in no real danger because I had been in bad situations in my past and I wasn’t bound or anything and was comfortable and warm. The last time I remember falling asleep on earth, it was very cold that night and it was very hard to stay warm.” Ann paused, looking at the ground thinking and looking sad. Sarah saw the sadness and understood all too well what she was feeling. She didn’t say anything, just to give her a moment. Ann seemed to come back to that moment again and smiled. “See? so I knew I couldn’t be in harm’s way, but I was a bit confused and then Karen explained a lot to me and she is so very sweet, she’s hard not to like.” Sarah smiled. “Oh yes! She is wonderful! Sometimes my mommy has asked your mommy to babysit me.” She was looking at the others playing on the playground but then looked at Ann and smiled. “That’s what made them want to adopt. They had to wait such a long time to get you.” Ann smiled and then looked confused. “Why is that?” Sarah looked away. “Well I would tell you but I think it would be best if your mommy does it because I don’t know all the details, only bits and pieces. Plus each adoption is different.” Ann looked off in the distance. “Yeah that’s what mommy said too but she said that when my new daddy comes home tonight, then they will tell me everything.” Sarah smiled. “Oh you’ll love them! They are super nice and just love little humans!” Ann looked at Sarah and smiled. “I am a bit nervous though, just because everything is new plus I’ll meet daddy tonight and my stomach is all butterflies when I think about it.” She laughed then. Sarah swung some more and smiled. “Oh I know what you mean. You’ll love him though. He is very sweet and caring. Whenever I had to spend the night at your mommy’s house, he was like a really daddy. He read to me at night and he’s very handsome!” She giggled Ann smiled thinking about it. “Really!? What’s your daddy like?” “Mommy and Daddy are divorced.” Sarah said dryly Ann spoke with concern. “Oh I’m sorry.” Sarah shook her head. “Don’t be, Daddy works for a big company and he was always too wrapped up in work and was hardly home and Mommy just couldn’t take it anymore so mommy had a talk with me about it one day, to see how I felt about it. I was sad that daddy hurt mommy like that and it hurt me too, I miss him but he was hardly there so it’s for the best.” Sarah smiled. “So it’s just me and Mommy and I’m her little girl.” She could see Ann was curious. “See mommy has me because I was what she wanted, a little sissy girl. I have always been a little girl on the inside and that was what my mommy wanted so they picked me.” Ann smiled. “Well I think you are very pretty and a very sweet girl!” Sarah smiled big. “Oh Ann I just know me and you will become such good friends!” Ann was still smiling. “I would love that! I haven’t had a friend in ages!” Sarah stopped swinging. “Do you want to go play on the slides?” Ann stopped swinging too. “Sure!” Then they merrily ran to the slides. Meanwhile Karen and Becky talked as Ann and Sarah played. Karen had sat down on a picnic table next to Becky after introducing Ann to Becky’s little girl. “Hi Karen! How are you?” Becky asked happily. Karen smiled. “I am great! I just got Ann last night! Oh Becky, she is the sweetest little thing and a little shy, I just adore her!” Becky smiled really big. “So that was Ann? Wow I bet you are so happy! How is she settling in?” Karen crossed her legs and smiled even bigger with excitement. “Oh she is such a darling! Just so sweet and she reacted well I think… I mean she was confused at first but after I explained things to her, she seemed happy to have a family.” Karen sighed then looked over to where Ann and Sarah were playing. “The poor dear, she said that she had lost her mom 5 years ago and that she had no family. That part, the agency didn’t know about. I mean they knew about the fact she had no family, but no details.” Becky nodded frowning. “My little Sarah was the same, only her family had totally disowned her because of the way she is, but just look at her now, she is soo happy!” She then smiled. “I am so happy for you! Has Christopher seen her yet?” Karen shook her head. “When they informed us that they would have Ann soon, they said they didn’t know what day it would be. Christopher had a business trip to take and had left 2 days earlier. The Agency called me early yesterday morning to tell me that Ann would be ready that evening. I called him to let him know what they had said and he said he should be home tonight. He was very excited Becky.” Karen had happy tears come to her eyes as she held her hands together at her chest as she was looking at Ann play. “Oh Becky she looked so beautiful when they handed her to me and so vulnerable. In that moment, it felt as though I had given birth to her and she really felt like my baby.” She then looked at Becky and wiped her tears. “They told me she would awaken for several hours but to just keep her warm and comfortable, and to keep an eye on her. I did and when she looked up at me with those beautiful brown eyes, I loved her even more!” Becky Smiled warmly at her friend. “I am so happy for you!” There was silence for a moment then Becky broke the silence. “Do you mind if Sarah stays overnight with you for a few days? I have a convention to go to this weekend, so it won’t be till next weekend if that’s ok?” Karen smiled. “Oh sure I would love to! Sarah is very sweet and such a good little girl.” Then she remembered something. “Oh is Sarah still having her birthday party this weekend?” Becky smiled. “Oh yes and little Sarah is so excited about it.” Just then Ann and Sarah ran up to them, all smiles and giggles. Sarah gave her mommy and huge hug. “Mommy, can Ann come to my birthday party this weekend!? I have asked Ann mommy and she said she would love to come!” Ann then came up to her own mommy and looked up at her. “Can I please Mommy? I like Sarah a lot and we have so much in common!” She was smiling. Karen and Becky looked at each other and smiled. Becky then picked up Sarah and put her on her lap and gently hugged her. “Of course she can sweetie!” Karen Gently hugged Ann. “I am so happy you have a friend, yes you can my sweetheart.” She smiled and kissed her cheek. Ann smiled big and blushed. She was so happy to have such a wonderful new mommy, and a friend. She felt she could burst with emotions. Tonight would be the night she learned everything and meet her new daddy and the thought of that gave her butterflies. |
