| Introduction: Felling a Giant | ||

Silky poked her head into the study, “William?” I glanced up from the journal I was reading and smiled, “Back from visiting with your sisters?” She nodded as she moved to stand in the doorway, “They said to thank you for sending those two lost men.” I grinned and sat back, “and did they decide to do as I told them?” Silky grinned, “Yes.” She looked back down the hall, “Did you know a glowing sphere was floating outside the front door?” I stood, “No.” I walked to the front door with her following me. When I looked out the sphere popped and a tiny voice spoke, “Mage. I send this message through a system of relays. We are on Trinidad and we have a problem we would like you to help us with.” I waited and nothing followed. I shook my head and walk into the kitchen, “Merlin!” He appeared and bowed, “Master William?” I shook my head, “someone sent a message sphere from Trinidad asking for our help.” He smiled as I started fixing something to eat, “Would you like me to pack for you?” I sighed and nodded, “Thank you.” Silky looked around my shoulder, “Would you put something together for me?” I looked at her as Merlin bowed and vanished, “Why?” She grinned, “I want to go with you.” I caressed her cheek and turned back to fixing lunch. After we ate and cleaned up I headed down to the portal door. Our two packs were waiting and I had Silky put her arms around me before placing my hand on the door. When the swirl of color and shapes stopped we were standing in a forest with huge trees and ferns. The trees were evergreen and at least three or four hundred feet tall. Silky was grinning as she released me and looked around. I murmured a finding spell and reached for her hand, “this way.” There were small streams and brooks everywhere. As it began to get dark I began noticing brush torn up and some of the lower branches ripped off. Silky was frowning as I made camp beside a small stream. I put wards around the camp as she laid out our bed. I pulled large rocks together in the center and set them on fire. Silky had come to enjoy this type of fire and sat beside it as she pulled our dinner out. I woke as something touched my wards and sat up to look. A tiny three foot girl was frowning as she felt the ward in front of her. I gestured and she squeaked as she was pulled through the ward. She looked at me with a frightened face as Silky sat up beside me. I smiled, “are you the one that sent for me?” She swallowed and stood straighter, “yes.” I smiled and gestured to our burning pile of stones, “Tell me what the problem is?” The tiny girl walked closer to the fire and held out her hands, “A giant.” She looked around, “You really shouldn’t have a fire. If he sees it...” I waited and she bit her lip, “Can you help?” I thought about it and finally had an idea, “Perhaps.” I let her rest by the fire as I laid down to think. Silky lay beside me and snuggled close, “A giant would be bad.” I grinned, “Not if he were on his own world.” She lifted up to look at me, “How would you make him go home?” I laughed, “By finding him a wife.” Silky grinned, “we need to meet him first.” I nodded and held her until she seemed to fall asleep. I thought of spells and whispered one that made my wards glow brightly. It wasn’t long before the earth began to shake. Silky lifted her head and the tiny girl stood, “Oh no!” I got up and calmly started making breakfast. The shaking grew stronger and the tiny girl ran out to hide. When the giant came into sight he was at least thirty feet tall but strangely he looked neat. Even his beard looked clean and combed. Silky hugged my arm, “If he wasn’t so big.” I smiled at her, “Your children are spoken for.” She grinned and I looked at the giant as he stopped. He covered his eyes to try to see through the glow from my ward, “Food?” I shook my head as Silky gasped. I let the glow disappear and my voice echo, “No we are not food.” The giant looked at us with a grin, “yes.” He reached for us and then jerked his hand back as I sent a jolt of lightning to his hand. I smiled, “I am here to see if you want a wife.” He was shaking his hand and glaring, “She to small.” Silky hugged me and slipped half behind me. I shook my head, “She is just here to see if you are handsome enough.” He straighten, “I am only giant here.” I nodded, “Yes and you are barely surviving.” He frowned before shrugging. I whispered a spell and he started to move only to slowly stiffen. I nodded to Silky, “Now to go find his wife to be.” She looked at me and I grinned before picking my pack up, “get your pack.” I waited and then started the long spell that would move us to another world. When we appeared I looked around and shook my head. The trees here were huge and reached a thousand feet into the sky. Even the grass and bushes looked huge. The few animals were on the same scale as the giant. Silky almost clung to me as I started another spell, this one of finding. I started walking and held her hand. We stayed in the brush and avoided openings. It was a couple of days before we looked out at a giantess, she was alone on the edge of the forest. She had what looked like a farm but by the look of the fields I knew she needed help. I looked at Silky and she grinned, “We need to talk to her.” We crossed the yard and approached her at the well. I used magic to make my voice louder, “Excuse us?” The giant turned to look around and then her eyes dropped down to us. She smiled, “little people.” I smiled, “Tell me lovely lady, would you by chance have a husband or a man promised to you?” She frowned, “No.” I glanced at Silky as she walked forward and started climbing a vine up to the top of the stones around the well. She stood and gestured for the giant to bend down. I watched as they talked, well, Silky talked and the giantess whispered. Silky looked down at me and called, “can you show her what our giant looks like?” I thought and then murmured a spell that made the image of the male giant appear. The giantess straightened and looked up at him before walking around him slowly. She looked at Silky and grinned before nodding. Silky started climbing down and came to take my hand, “She will talk with him.” The way back to where we entered this world went faster since the giantess let us ride on her shoulder. It was evening when we arrived and I began the spells to move us. Everything spun and whorled around us before slowly coming into focus. The giant still stood frozen and several tiny girls ran away. The giantess set us down but her eyes were only for the giant. I moved back with Silky before starting a spell. The giant looked around and froze when he saw the giantess. It was several moments before they started talking. I finally cleared my throat and the giant looked around. I used the spell to amplify my voice, “Well giant?” He looked at me and the giantess smiled, “Send him back with me.” I continued to look at the giant and he nodded. I gestured, “Hold hands.” I waited and then began the spell and they seemed to fade and then disappear. I sighed and stretched, “Well, that was fun.” Silky slipped her hand in mine, “take us home. I have something I need you to do.” |
